I walked upto the table, clearing my throat with a subtle cough. Both men turned their heads in my direction, their expressions a study in contrasts. One of them looked at me pleased and the other confused. I didn't bother to acknowledge the latter's reaction.

"Good Afternoon, Jivika. I was waiting for you." Sohail, my client, said, his tone polite.

I apologized for my tardiness, blaming the traffic—a half-truth, at best. Sohail waved it off graciously.

"No worries. By the way, I would like you to meet my friend, Aayansh. We coincidentally met when I arrived here," he added, while my gaze was already fixed on the one who was standing there, exuding an air of quiet confidence. His presence was unwelcome, but I chose to ignore it.

"Oh, hi Jivika," Aayansh said, his tone formal and stare blank.

I guess that poker face has become his permanent look. I nodded at him, my response barely civil.

'Your presence makes me feel like haaye-haaye and you are saying hi,' I wanted to reply, but held back, forcing a tight-lipped smile.

"Did you say something to me?" For a moment, our eyes met, and I could have sworn he heard my unspoken dialogue.

Sohail's phone rang, and he excused himself, leaving Aayansh and me alone.

"Maine toh kuch nahi kaha. Tumhare kaan baj rahe honge," I answered his earlier question, my tone dripping with sarcasm.

(I didn't said anything. Your ears must be ringing.)

Aayansh glared at me, muttering something under his breath. He took a step forward to leave only to get his foot entangled in the leg of the table. In a reflexive move, my hand reached out to steady him.

I masked the hint of concern, when his expression changed to his usual scowl. He jerked his hand away, grasping the table for support instead.

"I would have fallen because of you. Kaali billi ki tarah raaste mai hi khadi ho gayi ho," he snapped, his eyes flashing with annoyance.

(You are standing in my way like a black cat.)

I bristled at the jibe. Did he just call me a black cat? That too when I helped him? And did he really think I had deliberately tried to trip him?

How dare he? No, actually only he can dare do this. After all, Aayansh Sisodia had done a Phd. in getting on my nerves.

"You know what, I should have let you fall, but I pitied your brain, which seems to be located in your knees. So sorry," I shot back, and couldn't help but smirk at his reaction on hearing me.
