Returning from the gym, I walked into the hall where the staff members greeted me

Returning from the gym, I walked into the hall where the staff members greeted me. One of them asked me about lunch, but before I could deny, Dadi intervened, instructing him to send lunch to my room.

She knew I didn't prefer joining everyone, often skipping meals to avoid the dining table. I couldn't help but realize how my family, despite my ignorance and isolated behaviour, didn't leave me completely on myself, and showed their care without interfering in my life.

"No one will say anything if you take your meals in your mousehole. You don't have to skip them, to avoid your own family," she said, maintaining her calm and authoritative demeanor.

I could read the concern and disappointment on her face. It was not that she behaved like a principal dealing with a spoiled kid, she was just fond of her rules and authority, but she also cared for everyone.

I nodded, not able to bring myself to respond.

"What are you doing to yourself, Aayansh? This loneliness won't lead you anywhere," she pressed on, her voice tinged with worry.

'I am doing enough for myself, and I am the one who pushed himself to become this,' I wanted to say out loud to her, but I didn't want to get there, so I chose silence.

"Dadi, please–" I began, but she cut me off.

"I have lived longer than you, beta, and seen more of life. You will regret not holding the things that held so much importance, once you lose them in your life," she cautioned, her expression stern yet caring, as I blankly stared at her.

"I met Jivika when I went to meet her Dadi. She told me she met you somewhere and you ended up troubling her. Is it true?" My anger flared up, hearing her name, and the so-called complaint about me.

That stupid girl just fed a lie to Dadi. It was nothing new. She knew how to turn situations and people as she wanted. I don't know how she ends up getting in my way most of the times. Even when she was not present, her mention came for some or other reason.

It's like we get away only to somehow get back to each other. Why am I even thinking about her?

"I know what I am doing, Dadi. And why are asking me about her, when you already believe the outsiders enough over family?" I didn't intend to sound harsh, but it came out rude making me feel guilty.

"Oh, really? Then perhaps you can explain what you are doing besides displaying this shit behavior? What gives you the confidence that you can make distinction between family and outsiders?"

A voice came from behind, how would I not know who it was, but I still turned around to face him. Aviraj Bhaiya. His tone was neutral, his expression unreadable.
