"That's why you got the divorce papers prepared?"
Aviraj's question catches Tarini off guard, rendering her speechless. For an instant, she was stunned, thinking how he knew about the divorce papers when she had never mentioned them to him.
The unvoiced questions in his eyes make her feel like he was blaming her. She wonders if it was true, and if he genuinely wanted to know the truth.
Her hand, resting in his, slips away as she turns her head to avoid his penetrating gaze, which spoke volumes to her.
"You–" Tarini begins to speak, but the sound of the door knob interrupts her.
Dadi walks into their room, her expression changing to concern on noticing the bandage on Tarini's foot.
"What happened to you, Tarini? The staff told me you came back a few hours ago but didn't leave your room. So I came to check. What's going on? Why are you both staring at me instead of answering?" she asks them without a pause, her tone impatient. "Aviraj, tell me if she is fine?
Aviraj composes himself before responding, "She is fine, Dadi. It's a minor injury. She will recover soon, don't worry."
"I have to go meet someone. Take care of her." He rises, making way for Dadi to sit beside Tarini.
"Your wife is unwell, and you should be staying with her. But all you prioritize is your work," Dadi says, disappointed with his behaviour.
"It's important," Aviraj mutters, picking up his phone and leaving the room.
Tarini watches him leave, her heart filled with a longing. She wanted to stop him, but she couldn't ignore her inner voice reprimanding her for desiring for his presence.
Aviraj was aware of her gaze on him, but he chose to not look back. He wanted to stay beside her, but he also knew she wouldn't appreciate. It might result in things turning more complicated — the last thing he wished for.
Dadi notices the complexity of their relationship. If one was adamant, the other was stubborn, and no one was ready to make a move. She says, "He cares deeply for you, beta. The way he looks at you and acts around you says a lot about his feelings."
Tarini remains silent, uncertain if Dadi's words were correct. If they were, why couldn't she see or feel it?
"That's why everything else is more important to him than me," she replies, sounding more hurt than bitter.
She knew well Aviraj had made an excuse to leave her, just like he always did.
"You won't understand this right now, but he will make you believe everything. The day he accepts what's in his heart, he will take it upon himself to make you realize that you are his world. He is just like his father in the matters of heart." Dadi's tone was confident, and she caresses Tarini's hair lovingly.
