It was scary.

The massive truck. The sharp turn. The terrifying jerk. The impending end...

It was so close.

I slowly lowered my hands from my face, my gaze drifting to the side mirror, where I saw the empty road behind us. The truck had vanished into the distance, leaving behind only the faint echoes of its horn, which faded into the stillness of the night.

Our car had skidded to a halt, stopping mere inches from a tree.

Aviraj's voice pierced the fog, calling out to me. His concern was palpable, his voice laced with worry. But I was frozen, my vocal cords paralyzed along with the rest of me.

I felt like I wasn't breathing, like my body was locked in shock. My eyes remained fixed on the windshield, the glare from the truck's headlights still seared into my vision.

The sound of the car door opening and closing was a sudden jolt. Aviraj hurried to my side, yanking open my door as I dragged in a ragged breath.

"Look at me, Tarini," he said, unbuckling my seatbelt, and grasping my shoulders.

He pulled me carefully out of the seat. "Come with me." I stumbled, my legs trembling beneath me, but he held me steady, guiding me out.

"Tarini, can you breathe? Are you hurt? Are you listening to me? Talk to me!" Aviraj's tensed voice burst forth in a frantic rush.

My hand instinctively rose to my chest, as if searching for the beat of my heart, which seemed to have skipped a few beats.

I looked up at him, taking in his paling face and the trickle of sweat on his forehead. His eyes, haunted by the reminder of what almost happened, searched mine for answers. But I remained silent, the memory flashing again before me.

I closed my eyes for a second, letting the reality wash over me — we were alive, we had escaped the accident, and everything was fine. When I opened them again, Aviraj's face was etched with a mix of urgency and unease.

"Are you alright?" I managed to ask, my tone barely above a whisper.

But before I could even complete, the questions poured out of him, each one overlapping the next without pause. "What did I do? Why didn't I see that coming? What was I thinking? How could I risk your life? How could I have been so reckless?"

All the while, his gaze swept over me, scanning every inch of my body, checking for any signs of injury.

I tried to reassure him, saying, "Nothing happened, Aviraj," but he was losing himself in his own world of self-blame and reproach, oblivious to everything except the horror of what could have been.

"How can you say that? Anything could have happened to you. I could have..." His eyes, unblinking, bore into mine, brimming with fury that instantly turned to guilt.
