It was a crisp bright day, Luke by himself as he entered into Saint Peter's Cemetery, his car being the only one for a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. He pulled in where he needed to go, parking abruptly, turning the car off and grabbing a few items off the passenger seat.
He took a deep breath in clearing his throat as he got out of the car starting to walk down one of the rows, scanning the names quickly with his eyes.
He eventually came to the correct stone stopping in his tracks, sighing.
"I can't believe you've already been gone for a few months now, I feel like it gets harder and harder every day since you left."
"There's so many things I wish I could say and do you know? But I know none of that is going to change what already happened."
Now Luke was sitting on his knees eyes locked on his son's head stone.
"Before I get on that plane and go to Montana there's one last I need to do, not just for me but for you."
Luke reached into one of his jean pockets and pulled out a little badge.
"I wish I was able to give you this honor while you were still alive but I guess this is better late than ever. Even though you've only been a medic for a short while, but you proved me to, and to this city that you went into this career for the right reasons. You've been nothing but selfless and determined throughout this entire experience that's why today, I'm giving you this great honor of becoming lieutenant."
Luke started grinning through the tears forming in both of his eyes.
Luke took the badge and pressed it into the soil the sun reflecting off the shiny metal. "There you go... I now present Lieutenant Elliot Benjamin Hemmings.. my first born, my forever baby boy and my guardian angel. Always be proud of yourself, okay. Congratulations."
Luke used his arm to brush away some of the tears, grabbing the bouquet of flowers he bought along with him placing them by Elliot's engraved name.
Luke sat in silence for a few minutes before getting up patting the stone, leaving in his car.
The journey in Martinsburg was now complete, Big Sky now awaits him.
The end.
