After that unforgettable trip to Italy, the group slowly dispersed, each member embarking on their own unique journey.
Jake had returned to Seoul and was now running a bar in the bustling city. Life after university hadn't been easy for him. The weight of adulthood had hit hard, and Jake often found solace in the very drinks he served. There were nights when the line between bartender and customer blurred, and he found himself drinking too much. Despite these struggles, his bar had become a popular spot, and he was managing to keep it afloat. Over time, he was doing okay, learning to navigate the highs and lows of his new reality.
Bora, always the ambitious one, had secured a job at a leading tech company. Her days were filled with coding, meetings, and the fast-paced rhythm of the tech world. She had adapted well, her sharp mind and innovative ideas earning her respect and recognition in her field. Despite the demands of her job, she always found time to stay connected with her friends, often being the glue that held their dispersed group together.
Nari had pursued her passion and was now working as a journalist. She thrived in the fast-paced environment, her inquisitive nature and knack for storytelling making her a valuable asset to her publication. Her articles often touched on deep societal issues, and she found fulfillment in giving a voice to the unheard. Yet, there was a part of her that missed the simplicity of their high school days, the closeness of their little group, and the nights spent under the stars sharing dreams and fears.
Sunghoon had followed his heart's desire to explore. He was traveling the world with his TV show crew, documenting his adventures and sharing stories of different cultures, people, and cuisines. Each country offered new experiences and learnings, and Sunghoon embraced them all with open arms. Yet, despite the excitement and the constant movement, he sometimes felt a sense of loneliness creeping in. The constant traveling and the distance from his loved ones left him feeling a bit lost.
---
Sunghoon stood on the edge of a boat in Paris, the City of Light. He leaned on the railing, staring out at the Seine River as it glistened under the city lights. The boat gently rocked, and the chatter of his crew filled the background. He took a sip from the beer in his hand, sunglasses hiding the uncertainty in his eyes. Despite the lively atmosphere, his thoughts were far away, lost in the complexities of his life.
Heeseung, his friend and colleague, noticed his distant demeanor. Heeseung made his way over, throwing an arm around Sunghoon's shoulders. "What's up, man? You've been acting weird lately."
Sunghoon shrugged, trying to shake off the melancholy. "I don't know, Heeseung. Just... thinking."
Heeseung tightened his grip, a reassuring gesture. "You look lost, Sunghoon. If you need to talk, I'm here."
Sunghoon offered a small smile. "Thanks, Heeseung. I appreciate it."
Heeseung nodded and headed back to join the rest of the crew, leaving Sunghoon to his thoughts. Soon after, the host of the show, Nayoung, approached. She stood beside him in silence for a moment, both of them gazing out at the serene view.
"What are you looking at, Sunghoon?" she asked softly.
"I'm looking at the slow passing of time," he replied with a laugh, the phrase sounding almost poetic in his native language.
Nayoung chuckled. "There's something about speaking Korean in a foreign land, isn't there?"
Sunghoon nodded, a wistful smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, there is. Makes you miss home sometimes."
Nayoung sighed. "You're making me miss home today, Sunghoon."
He teased her gently. "Liar. Like you really miss home."
She laughed, shaking her head. "I do... but then I forget."
Sunghoon took another sip of his beer, his eyes reflecting the lights of the city. "You know, Nayoung, you and I are a lot alike. We're vagabonds. For us, to wander is to live."
Nayoung nodded thoughtfully. "And that's why, the moment we get back to San Francisco, you'll quit our show."
Sunghoon looked at her, shocked. "How did you know?"
She gave him a smug smile. "Am I right or am I right?"
Sunghoon sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Nayoung, to get somewhere, you must leave something behind. It's best to leave things at the right time, or you'll be left with too many regrets."
Nayoung's expression softened. "Any idea what you'll do? What's the plan?"
Sunghoon shrugged. "The plan is... to not have a plan. I'll figure something out." He leaned in closer, teasing her. "Or else, I'll trick someone like you into hiring me."
She laughed, shaking her head. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait!" Sunghoon turned around, curious about what she had to say.
"The channel wants to launch a new show for the European market. It's a kind of reality travel show where the host will live in some of the world's most famous cities for three months each, and we'll film their experiences. The lineup for the first year includes Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, and Berlin."
He looked at her, intrigued but cautious. "And you want me to shoot this?" Sunghoon wasn't exactly thrilled at the prospect, as he was already feeling the monotony of his current show and yearned for something different.
Nayoung shook her head with a smile. "No, I want you to host it."
Sunghoon's eyes widened in surprise. "Me? Host it?"
"You're perfect for it, Sunghoon," Nayoung said earnestly. "You're smart, you're confident, and you're charming enough to make people forget how much of a dumbass you really are."
He joined in her laughter, feeling a bit lighter. But then she turned serious, placing her hands on his shoulders. "Listen, jokes aside. Travel is your life. Trust me, you're perfect for this."
Sunghoon looked at her, still unsure. "What are you thinking, Nayoung?"
She squeezed his shoulders gently. "Say yes, man."
Sunghoon hesitated, then finally nodded. "Yes."
Nayoung's face lit up with joy. "Yes?"
He nodded again, smiling widely. "Yes."
She squealed in happiness, throwing her arms around him in a tight hug. They laughed together, the weight of his decision lifting as they celebrated the new journey ahead.
