Seliel hummed quietly to herself as she walked through the halls to her math class. She was dreading it, already knowing the pile of math sheets she was to take home for homework. Her freshly manicured baby blue acrylic nails tapped against her dark pink air pod case. She preferred headphones, but hers broke the previous week due to her overuse and carelessness when vacuuming. Don't ask.

Her lack of focus, or her dedication to thinking of a song connected to Staying Young by Frya Sally, made her collide with the other junior in front of her, causing her to fall back on her bottom.

"Whoa, you good," Cole said, turning around to the girl who was trying desperately to pick herself up again.

"Yeah, totally, sorry about that," Seliel said quickly, taking the hand Cole offered her gratefully. "Just wasn't looking where I was going."

"You're Cecilia?" Cole asked, trying to remember her name.

"Selina, but you can call me Seliel," Seliel corrected, her hands dusting off her blue jeans.

"Seliel, right. I saw your name on the music club sign-up sheet. Looks like we'll be working together," Cole said, breaking the ice calmly. Seliel nodded, trying to match Cole's ease.

"Yeah, I guess," Seliel clenched her fist before asking: "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure, go ahead," Cole said as the two walked into the hallway.

"Why do you make music?" Seliel blurted out quickly. She cursed herself for asking such a weird question after just meeting someone for the first time.

"I've never really thought of that," Cole said, shrugging which caused his backpack to slide higher on his broad shoulder. "Both my parents are in the music industry. I don't sing or dance, so I might as well make cool beats."

"Yeah, I understand," Seliel said looking at her white Converse. "I make music because it's sort of an escape from reality."

"I hear you there," Cole said smiling. "Well it looks like we're here. It was nice meeting you Seliel, maybe we should hang out sometime and make those 'cool bangers' Ms. Kathy mentioned."

"That'd be great," Seliel laughed. The two entered their math class just before the second bell rang.

"Okay, class, take out your textbooks and solve problems 1-50," Ms. Kathy said, seated at her desk, with her Singles Ready to Mingle podcast already flowing into her earbuds.

Even though the fifty problems were challenging, Seliel kept her head high, and her unconfidence low, and her pencil on her paper scribbling away at the demon numbers.
