After tying in every single challenge of sportsmanship, character and swimming smarts, the only last test for the title of team captain was the 100 meter free style. Who ever reached the end line the first, got to be team captain.
Oceania, Nya, Smith was never one to back down from a challenge, neither was her component, Nyad Seasworth. Already being team captain for the previous three years Nyad was not going to let a Junior take her spot as a the team Captain in her senior year.
The two girls got on their blocks, shaking off any ounces of fear and anxiety, all they needed now was pure stragety and power, a lot of power.
"On your marks," Mr. Fisher said. The two girls placed her hands in diving position above their capped heads, steadying themselves on the diving block. "Set, Go!"
Nyad was quicker of the blocks and had a farther distance than Nya, but Nya's quick strokes propelled her into first place by the twenty meter mark. 100 meters was a ront and back on the lane of the pool, which meant the girls had to do the water flip under water.
By the 50 meter mark, Nyad was in the lead. Her strong legs sent great kicks that drove her farther through the pool. Nya kept a smal distance between the two with her fast strokes and small amount of breathing.
By the 75 meter mark the two girls were neck to neck, neither oen was ahead of the other, and it was looking like it was going to stay that way. By the 90 meter mark Nya had a small lead and was about to press the buzzer when Nyad's buzzer sounded.
Nyad shot up from the pool raising her arms in triumph as she high fived the kids around her.
"That was a close race ladies, shake hands," Mr. Fisher said, clapping his hands to getehr as he congratulated Nyad. Nyad gave Nya a smirk shile they shook hands, leaving immediately after to receive congratulations from the team.
"Can we see the replay? Who took a video?" Nya asked, wanting to see where she messed up. Benthomaar's hand shot up, along with his phone.
"I got it on video," He said, handing his phone over to Nya so she could watch the recording. Just before Nya could accept her defeat, her eyes caught a small movement with Nyad's leg at the ending line. She replayed the video and put it on slow-mo to see all the details.
"She cheated! She cheated!" Nya cried rushing up to the the swim coach and pushing the phone in his face. Mr. Fisher looked at the screen with a frown.
"Nya's right, Nyad did cheat. She touched her foot to the bottom of the pool and pushed her self into the ending line, which is against the rules." Mr. Fisher grabbed Nya's hand lifting it up in the air. "Looks like Nya is our new captain."
The team seeed confused at first but shrugged and erupted into cheers and congratulations, leaving a scowling Nyad near the benchigs, basically burning holes into the back of Nya's head with her glares.
