Kylie

Kylie, Lucas, Della, and Chase were about to dart out of the factory when Miranda shouted and wiggled her pinky. It took a second before Kylie felt an unexpected pressure materialize on her face. Feeling her fingers around the edges, she felt the hard plastic that covered from her forehead down to the line of her nose, save for the two holes that opened for her vision and another one below her nose.

"What is this?" Della asked.

It was then she realized Lucas, Chase and Della all wore identical black masks with a sort of stylish design to them. She supposed the witch must have copied them from some superhero TV show.

Miranda explained that they were bound to be seen by the public, and it would be best to wear a mask to conceal their faces, even if they may surmise that they were witnessing the emergence of new empowered humans.

Grabbing Lucas firmly on the waist, Kylie flew off into the night sky, now raining cats and dogs. Once they were up in the air, she spotted a figure glowing light blue fly around the coast. Looking in the other direction, she saw another figure engulfed in orange light. Burnett had instructed them to go in opposite directions. Della and Chase would help with evacuation in Kittery; Kylie and Lucas would stay near the coast.

High in the air, it was easy to spot traffic lights and residential buildings. A police cruiser drove down a closeby residential island connected to mainland by a bridge, urging the residents to evacuate through the PA system. Looking up at a distant park, she spotted a street fair with a Ferris wheel in the middle, all of which now ceased working. Just beyond it ran another police car giving out the same instructions. People were rushing out of buildings to the open rain. Some drove cars, but there were also many who walked on foot.

She heard Director Potter's voice through her ear comm. He was informing the three heroes about their assistance.

"Man, the electricity in the air is so high I can feel it even without transforming," said Lucas loudly over the falling rain and thunder. Kylie pushed away the thought of how handsome he looked with wet hair covering most of his forehead.

The wind picked up the same time she heard anguished screams from somewhere nearby. Clarity and calmness instantly washed over her. She followed where she heard the voices. Lucas, unable to hear what she heard, was puzzled by her sudden change of course. She simply said, "You'll see."

They landed in patch of trees near a suburban neighborhood. The storm and rain partially concealed them from panicking residents (who were rushing out of their homes and did not notice them). Lucas released her.

"What's going on?"

Kylie listened to the voices still screaming for help. It was close. As far as she could tell, it came from a child and a woman.

Come on, Elson. You need to climb down the tree. It's gonna fall.

Kylie ran in the direction. She didn't know if it was right, but she hoped her protector's gut was spot on. There had been instances where she ran around like a blind animal. Unable to get to her charge without a little help.

No. Don't think like that.

Lucas was running effortlessly beside her in no time. Her heart tugged at the sweetness before she shoved it back down. They reached the front yard of a fenced blue-white house in no time. The lights were on, but no one seemed to be inside.

"Elson, come on! You have to climb down."

Lucas pointed. "There, I can hear them. Behind the house."

They dashed to the backyard. There at the edges of the trees stood a soaking wet woman, talking loudly to her little son. He couldn't be older than six. He was on top of a worn little treehouse, supported by two tree branches that extended two feet outwards.
