Joe slumped over asleep finally in the chair next to Winston's hospital bed where he tried to rest in a drafty hospital gown and with a thick white bandage covering the left side of his handsome pensive face and an aching body from his earlier attack.
He couldn't sleep. At all. When he tried to close his grey eyes he kept seeing him there in his dreams.
Skip Sands.
He saw him as he pulled off his mask and grinned maniacally at him while holding the knife.
( " You deserve this. " )
He swallowed hard and reached for his phone. He deftly began to search for a phone number using Google. It was funny ironic how easy it was finding anything on anyone via the Internet these days, he thought as he found what he was seeking easily. It was quite frightening actually. As a prosecutor he had actually taken stalking cases seriously. He wished he had taken all his cases seriously. Maybe if he had known exactly who Spencer was to him. Then again why did a blood link matter when it came to justice? , he mused to himself.
Maybe if he had not been so self hating. So wedded to his closet and trying to be exactly the man his father the great senator wanted him to be. Maybe.
Spencer had deserved proper justice. He was sorry he had failed the man in that. How many others had he failed in the many plea deals he had taken? Why go to court when he could just offer a plea and call it a win ?
His eyes faded to a vacant hopelessness as he called the number.
It rang. Once. Twice. Three times.
On the fourth time it was answered. He heard him.
" Who is this? ," said Dr. Spencer Norland - Lane. " What do you want? "
He hesitated for a second. The victim. The first victim. The one in the wheelchair. His failure. His disgrace.
His half brother as well.
" It's Winston Arnett. "
Spencer snapped tersely," Why are you calling me? Why? "
Winston spoke through dry tense lips. He spoke only three words.
" I am sorry. "
Then he hung up before Spencer could respond.
Afterwards he looked at another number he had found.
Richard Norland.
He closed his eyes while still holding the phone.
