" He said what ! ," Pookie exclaimed in the kitchen as the server Lee - Lee told him, Sal , Mark and Nigel exactly what the tall fiery minister had said. Word for word.
Nigel shook his head at his cook. " Behave, Pookie. It's not worth it. We're still living down Skip Sands' reign of terror here remember. "
Pookie looked disgusted. " You always spoiling our fun , man. Go home to your husband. "
Nigel smiled wryly. The last thing he was going to do was head home. Not with the particular event happening in the party room.
Lee - Lee bounced over to the sink area. After all she needed to run water for two minutes. Or maybe it was one minute. Five minutes. Oh well. It would be running. And have a little something extra in it.
She smiled. What the boss did not know wouldn't hurt him after all.

Joy sat up straight in her chair, her eyes firmly fixed on her brother who smirked back. " Lazarus, we are trying to enjoy a lovely meal. If you can not do that perhaps you should leave. "
Thomas Jones pursed his lips at his daughter. " Baby girl, don't be rude to your brother. He could have been more tactful yes but he is honest. Honesty is a good thing. " He looked at each of Faith's family. " No offense to you all. I'm sure you all are.... nice people but we're good Christian church going people. We are not used to...... your sort. "
Jenessa said sharply," Mr. Jones , you are not the only good Christian church goer at this table. I was born and raised a Baptist. Baptized a Baptist. My husband is a Catholic. My son is a lay pastor at the church your daughter, who is a very nice woman, preaches at. We are most definitely your sort. "
DuBuis pressed his fingers to his head which had Spencer, Faith and Luci looking at him with concern. " And , sssir , exactly what is your sort? I'm just curious. "
Thomas didn't answer DuBuis. Lazarus did , saying," My father, who has been married to the same Black woman for years now ,means we are not normally exposed to sinners like you people. "
" Sinners ? ," DuBuis said in disbelief as Spencer placed a hand on his husband's shoulder gently , saying," Let it go, sweetheart. He's not worth it. "
Lazarus turned to Spencer with rage building in his eyes. " The one not worth it is you, little man on wheels. None of you are worth it. You and your self hating husband with your mixed up so called marriage. The strong Black boy you are forcing to impersonate a girl. The little White Jew boy there you call a ward. And the little fairy boy in the bow tie. And I can't believe that the state would trust you two with an innocent baby. " And he gestured to Jenessa who sat looking outraged next to an uncomfortable Nicholas. " And, you, woman, should know better than to correct a man , especially a Black man, in public. "
DuBuis and Nicholas were both about to respond when Faith beat them to it. She pointed her finger at the man. " Leave my family alone. My mother is the strongest woman I know. She knows her bible better than you do I bet. My brother and Spencer adore each other. Their marriage is stronger than anything you would find to be in. Especially with the likes of Sheena here. "
The girl whispered," Shawna. "
" Whatever," Faith continued on. " And these kids are extremely happy and well adjusted. Especially Luci who is not a boy. She is a girl. And a beautiful smart girl at that. These kids could not ask for better parents than my brother and his wonderful kind if sightly odd husband. "
Joy said ," I agree. "
Bliss sighed. " Lazarus, can we have one family meal without your bullshit. I mean really. Let's change the subject. Spencer, DuBuis , Miracle is a little too young now but I do accept babies starting at eighteen months at my day care center. We start there at two thousand dollars a month. Since Faith is dating Joy I can probably swing you a little discount though. Maybe ten percent off ? "
Thomas shook his head at his other daughter. " Watch the language, Bliss. And no business talking at the table. It's crude. "
" Especially for a woman," Lazarus said swiftly as the server appeared with the drinks and Nigel with a refill of homemade bread and fresh butter. The server put down his water with a slight smile that bordered on being a smirk. Lazarus quickly downed it in one long gulp. " Yes. That was quite refreshing. At least this queer place doesn't fail at tap water. "
Nigel froze in place as he lowered the bread bowl to the table. His lips thinned and his eye turned cold. " Yes. It is so easy to fuck up water, isn't it? ," he said as he left the room.
Lazarus said to Faith ," Why are you dating my sister when you are facing an assault trial that could give you ten years in a White man's prison? Or do you think the system will let you off for all your years of shuck and jiving? "
