Jenessa added sugar and milk to her cup of tea as she sat on the outdoor patio at her and Nicholas' house with Faith who looked oddly uncomfortable in the Evergreen Acres home. She wanted to tell her youngest child it was ok. Sometimes she too felt uncomfortable in the luxury of her new life but it was getting easier. Sometimes it was all too easy to slip into what she called in her head " Lady of the Manor " mode. " I want to talk to you about this ridiculous case. "
Faith rolled her eyes and reached out for a shortbread cookie that was delicious. Jenessa was envious of those cookies because they were made by the cook who was very possessive of the kitchen and refused to allow her in to cook. Her daughter took a sharp bite and crunched it before saying," I don't want to discuss that, Mama. I'm tired of hearing about it. Kinda hoping Richard can still make it go away. I didn't do anything wrong. "
" I know you didn't do anything wrong, Faith , but it still concerns me. It concerns Nicholas as well. He wants to hire an attorney from DC for you. He's very good at criminal defense and is licensed to practice in Maryland. I think you should let him do it. Richard is a nice man. When he wants to be. But he's a tax attorney. What does he know about criminal law? "
Faith sighed and shook her head at her mother. " He graduated from Harvard Law. I'm assuming he knows something. He's also senior partner, one of them , at that firm he loves so much. I trust him. Besides he's only assisting on this crap. He put one of his junior partners on it. And Jeremiah Duncan does have criminal defense experience. He's won a lot too. "
Jenessa felt so frustrated. She always did whenever she talked to her youngest child. Faith was the one who had fought the most with her growing up. DuBuis had been her good boy ; always strong and protective of his family. Sylvia had been headstrong with her own vocal feelings about life and her place in it but not like Faith. Faith had her daddy's temper and stubbornness. She always was so sure she was right. Even if she was wrong. "Faith , that's good but I want you to have the best. This is your life we are talking about. Your career although I don't know why you ever joined the police department. You should have been a teacher. You're so smart. Nicholas wants....."
Faith narrowed her eyes and shook her head once more. " I don't care what your slick fancy husband wants, Mama. Richard and Jeremiah are my lawyers and I trust them. I don't need nor want Nicholas to " help " me. Ok ? '
