As Glory sat in her car in front of the house her phone rang. It was the clinic, she noticed with a sense of sharp panic forming through her whole body. It could not be the results. She had just done the mammogram. It was too soon.

" Hello," she practically whispered as she answered the phone.

" Glory ? Dr. Sidra Frank here. I know I told you a week but you seemed so...... upset that I put a high priority on it all. " The woman stopped speaking briefly and Glory wanted to hang up. She didn't really want to know. She didn't. She didn't want to die. Like her mother. Her eyes went towards her house.

Her husband.

Her son.

Her job.

She didn't want this. Whatever it was.

" Sorry. I had to sign off on something for a nurse. Ok. I have your mammogram results here. It's not good. But it's not bad either. We can fight this, Glory. You have what looks like stage three breast cancer. "

Glory wanted to scream. She wanted to throw down the phone. Turn it off. Just keep driving. And driving. And driving. Until she could outrun this spector that had been following her her whole life. And it was following her daughter too. Dodie who never checked her own breasts regularly. " Am I dying? "

Like her mother. Her hands began to shake. Andrew. Alfred. Dodie. Her grandchildren. Her stepchildren.

" We're all dying. But no today you are not. It's a three which is serious and it looks fairly aggressive but we can fight this. A three is totally treatable. There is a five year survival rate with this stage. I want you to check in to St. Paul's on Wednesday morning for a mastectomy. Then I am going to start you on radiation treatments. Ok ? After you can consider breast reconstruction but not till after radiation is done. I'm going to make all the arrangements on my end for Wednesday and then email it to you. This is going to end good. Don't worry. Do you have any questions for me? "

Glory didn't answer. She was too busy looking at her front porch where her husband stood watching her with a pensive expression on his face. How could she tell him ? How could she tell the children? Not tonight. She wouldn't tell them tonight.

" No. No questions, doctor. "
