" You don't want to go home, do you, Dodie ? ," Glory asked her daughter over the phone in the kitchen of her stepson in law Richard. She sat at the table trying to ignore her sore chest area and drinking a bottle of water as her husband Andrew finished off his famous red hot chili with extra beans and much spice that he was making for Nigel and the kids to eat that night.
Dodie didn't answer at first. It was pure Dodie MO she knew in her heart. Growing up even with all his issues Alfred had been her easier child. Dodie was always very dramatic with her ever changing hobbies and whatnot. She was a whirlwind moving through life doing exactly what she wanted to because she felt she could. After all she was the very spoiled only daughter of Franco Giadello. Glory thought Dodie's biggest mistake had been marrying Tony Angeletti straight out of high school. She gave up a promising future career as an artist and a full academic scholarship to a highly prestigious art school in New York to become his housewife and mother of his children who even Glory had to acknowledge were little spoiled demons.
" Not really, Momma. I will go back but not right now. Is there a reason I can't stay? I know I'm not the favorite son Alfred but....."
Glory sighed and Andrew glanced over at her as he was instructing Lewis , Rebecca and Richie on the art form of chili cooking. She understood sibling rivalry. She had been a social worker after all. For years. And years. But she wished it eventually ended. They were in their thirties for heaven sake. And it was usually on Dodie's side more than Alfred.
" I don't have favorites. I love all my children and stepchildren. Now what the hell is going on? "
Rebecca's eyes widened over her favorite step grandmother cussing. Daddy, Mommy and Daddy Nigel never wanted her saying that word. Ever. Although when Mommy was alive she had said worse about Daddy. Her lip poked out as she thought about Daddy. She missed him. Nobody called her Pumpkin since he had went to sleep.
Dodie laughed. " I tell my children that too. We all lie. Don't we ? Ok. Tony is having an affair. "
Glory was getting confused. Maybe it was the pain medicine from the doctor. " And ? Tony has had affairs before. Isn't that what women in our family have to tolerate? "
" It's different this time. He says he's in love this time. He wants a separation. And maybe a divorce. Probably an annulment. We are Catholic after all. It's some creature he met online. Some travel writer. " She stopped talking briefly and when she began again her voice was tinged with bitterness. " Margaret Glover. Marge. Sounds like something from a cartoon or a greasy spoon waitress. Anyway she's from Ireland but travels a lot for work. She's older than him and widowed with no kids. Must be nice. If he wants his freedom he's getting the kids too. I'm reclaiming my life. I'm not saying I'm staying here forever but.....when I go back it may not be to him. And it's not my choice. "
