Nigel was waiting for the Uber to pick him up from the courthouse parking lot and checking emails when suddenly he got hit by the worst ever chest pain he had experienced in his life. It was so bad it threw him off balance a little and had him gasping slightly.
This could not be a side effect. Could it ? His lupus flares were getting worse. And that was irritating him.
He reached into his ever present black tote bag and searched for the bottle of antacids he remembered tossing in it. Of course he could not find them. Maybe they were home with the other medicine. Damn. He sucked in a breath.
His phone dinged with a text message. Alexi. Again.
Alexi : How far away are you? I think I have Zipp calmed down. I've told him we're not making any real changes at the company. He'll stay in charge and do what they do so well and keep making money for all of us.
Then another came in. Richard.
Richard: You left without saying goodbye. To me. Or anyone. People are wondering where you are now.
Nigel felt a sudden emotion hit him. Guilt. He was becoming a good executive yes but a shitty husband. And father. Maybe even a lousy son really. He and Richard were drifting apart. He enjoyed his new job but he didn't want to lose his family.
Another pain hit him just as hard and he gritted his teeth.
He dialed a number on his phone.
It rang. And rang.
Finally it was answered. Richard said," Did you forget how to get to the office? "
Nigel thought he deserved that. He closed his eye as another wave of pain crossed over his body. " I.... I need you. Richard.... I ..... I love you. "
Richard replied with urgency and concern in his voice," Nigel, are you alright? Where are you ? "
Nigel fell onto his knees. His chest felt like an elephant was sitting on it. And, to his horror, he couldn't keep himself from not vomiting all over the ground. " Help ...... Richard...... I....."
Then his eye began to shut slowly against his will almost and he fell into a pit of total darkness that awaited him.
