My eyebrows went straight up when Ella spoke. "What? Seriously!?" I couldn't hide the excitement in my voice. Ella paused, as if reconsidering, then nodded. "You were right about one thing. If we don't do it, it may never get fixed. I don't want to live the rest of my life in fear of being killed for who I am." A grin spread across my face. "That's the spirit." Ella shook her head, but was smiling. "Don't get your hopes up. I'm not sure how we're going to do this yet." I raised an eyebrow. "So what motivated you other than my rightness?" Ella rolled her eyes, then said, "I think Lilly could be a hybrid. Possibly Amelia too." I went dead silent. She had already expressed that to me, but she was the one who constantly told me that there was no way we could ever reveal it to them. Just in case. Ella, seeing my look, explained. "I've decided that we have to try. We can't live lives as hybrids without taking some risks." I nodded. "Though we should be completely sure before doing it. Not just guessing." I gave Ella a look and she flinched. "Yeah. We don't want to snoop, but I do think we should pay closer attention, and ask more questions," she said. "Yeah. And we can try to do stuff ourselves. We have to take matters into our own hands." Ella went to sleep, but I took out my journal and quickly wrote an entry.

Well, today I talked to Lilly during orchestra! Ella is, well, Ella. She overanalyzes stuff. She claims that Lilly must be a light fairy, or at least a light hybrid. Honestly, I can see it. Both of us have grown accustomed to analyzing every single person in our school, just to find some sort of company. Honestly, we're beginning to suspect Amelia too. Sometimes she seems to disappear from view, even when we look at her. We've been getting very close, but Jake is still my personal best friend. Anyway, that's basically all that happened today.

At lunch the next day, we told Jake that we wanted to spend "girl time" with Lilly and Amelia. He shrugged it off, looking a little confused, so we took our chance. We sat down in the courtyard together with our food. "So, how's it been recently?" Lilly asked, smiling in her usual pleasant way. I saw Amelia give her a small smile too. "Oh, fine," I said. "Our parents have been calling us a lot. They like to keep in touch, you know?" It wasn't a lie. Our parents did call often, but it was mostly so I could ask about Amelia and Lilly's families. "Oh, yeah," Lilly chuckled. "I get that." I tilted my head curiously. "Do your parents live nearby, Lilly?" She shook her head. "No, not really. They live in Michigan. So do Amelia's." Great. Their kids are far away. They will be less likely to be found this way. The less hybrids in one place, the better, Ella noted. She was good at this, I realized. I would have never thought of that right away. "Cool. Our parents live in West Virginia," Ella said. I decided to pay closer attention to their appearances. Lilly seemed to glow when she smiled. Ella was right about that. I also kept losing Amelia. She seemed to disappear from view every so often. I looked around at the people surrounding us. Should we ask if they want to stay over at our dorm? I know it's a school night, but that way we can ask more in-depth questions. About hybrids. I asked Ella. Good idea, she responded. "Do you want to stay the night at our dorm?" Ella asked. Lilly smiled, glowing as she did. I was beginning to see it more and more, though I doubted anyone who wasn't paying close attention would. "Sure! As long as you don't have any homework." Everyone shook their heads. "Great," Lilly said.
