"The threats are getting worse," our mother whispered. There was a long moment of silence, before Ella whispered, "how did this happen?" as I, raising my voice only slightly, said, "Should we come back!? We can leave if you need us." My father shook his head. "No. Stay there. Pursue your dreams." I flinched. "But... they hurt you!" He sighed. "I know. But we can hold our own against them," he smiled softly. "Fire and water hybrids aren't very rare, but we're strong." My mom nodded along. Ella and I shared a look. As much as we wanted to go back to them, it would cost a lot of time and money. Ella sighed. "Just... stay safe out there. We don't know much about these people, but they're dangerous. They call themselves the Hybrid Hunters for a reason." I eyed my father's injury. "We will, don't worry," our mother said with a pained smile. "So, what exactly happened?" Ella asked. Dad sighed. "I got a text from an unknown number yesterday. It said that if we didn't leave within the next week, they would come to our house. We didn't know what to think, since they had been empty threats up to this point. The text said we had the week, but they came today. I got shot. Thankfully Trevor - you remember my friend Trevor, right - was on his way to help us out. We are in his car right now." I was furious. "I can't believe those assholes! They are liars. How could they even give you an ultimatum like that? Tear apart your entire lives by moving within a week or we kill you? Is that the gist of it?" Ella cringed. "Amelia and Lilly are going to hear you." Mom's eyes widened. "You have friends over? We better let you go." We said our goodbyes and hung up. The moment we did, our fake smiles disappeared. "Ella, this isn't good. They can make all the threats they want, but they hurt him," I whispered. "This is different." Ella shook her head helplessly. "I know." We had first gotten the threats from papers placed everywhere - from pockets to our house's windows. They were always signed "Hybrid Hunters". Then emails. Never before had they physically injured one of us. "We should... rethink our...ideas for today," Ella murmured, and for once I agreed. This had reminded me that we could trust no one. We only had each other, and our parents. We had to keep them safe. Even if that meant giving up exciting plans. "Let's go back out," I whispered. We opened the door back up. "Hey, are you guys okay? You look a little stressed," Lilly mentioned, and I flinched. "Oh, no, we're fine. Our father just had an accident, that's all." She frowned. "Is he alright?" I nodded. "He'll be fine." She paused, then asked, "so what were you going to say before all that?" There was cold silence for a moment, then I chuckled. "Nothing important, I hope, because I can't remember." I saw her face fall. So she predicted it. Ella and I shared a look. "Well," I said, faking a yawn. "I'm tired. I'm going to sleep."

The day went by slowly and painfully. The only times of solace were when I talked with Jeff. I forgot my worries when I was with him. At first, I had been interested because he was interested, but now it was something more. I felt myself opening up to him more and more- despite having to hide part of my existence from him. And at the end of the day, Ella and I chilled in our room to make ourselves feel better.
