From what Dara said, it was enough to make Lisa the prime suspect. On the day of Jennie's death, there were only a few people in the mansion. In other words, a killer in the house could execute his or her wicked plans smoothly.
It could be considered premeditated; a plan Lisa had come up with months ago, creating an opportunity for someone he hired to do the job without a problem. Considering the original Jennie's mind was a maze of suicidal thoughts, it wouldn't be surprising if her killer made it look like a suicide.
If Jane didn't wake up in this body, Dara would've arrived that morning with Jennie's cold body. However, she was so certain Lisa was innocent. Even so, the authorities would think otherwise if they got hold of Jennie's cold body that day.
After all, in this type of crime, it was always the husband.
But she was a hundred percent certain Lisa was innocent. If anything, it appeared someone was trying to frame him.
'If it's him, then making it look like a suicide was plausible,' Jennie told herself, getting herself immersed in the original Jennie's death. 'However, Jennie was strangled to death. If I didn't wake up that day, the autopsy would reveal her cause of death. If that happened, the first person the authorities would point their fingers at was... him.'
Jennie narrowed her eyes, thinking deeper about the case. It was not that Jennie was unbothered by the original Jennie's death. To be fair, it had always been at the back of her head, despite what was going on. It was the very reason she was working out to be physically fit, and also the other reason she agreed to have a bodyguard.
Now that she was having leads, her concern about this matter consistently shot up.
Everyone on her suspect list had reasons to kill her. However, all of them had no reason to drag Lisa down. Even if Lisa would prove himself innocent, his reputation would take a disastrous blow if he became a suspect in a murder.
And that scared her.
"Is there a problem?" asked Lisa to his wife, who had been staring at him since dinner started. His brows rose, receiving no response from her. Jevin, who was sitting beside her, also turned his head to look at her, intrigued.
'What scares me about the original Jennie's case is that... the possibility she wasn't the target at all, but collateral damage.' Jennie kept her eyes fixed on Lisa, but her mind was drifting elsewhere. 'I've been in the underground all my life not to figure out that her death would have hurt Lisa the most. It wouldn't benefit him at all.'
In the underground world, a person's death wasn't always premeditated. Sometimes, a person's death was simply collateral for the bigger cause. For instance, if someone requested an assassination order, it doesn't necessarily mean the target had done something wrong.
Those who would request such a thing were either targeting someone related to the real target or had other wicked and meticulous plans laid out. Most of the people Jennie encountered doing such a thing were no ordinary men. She could say they were the most twisted yet clever felons out there.
'Who is it?' she wondered. 'A business rival? Or does this person hold a personal grudge against him? I hope it is simply a stupid and sloppy murder and the real target is Jennie, not him. That it was done without such meticulous plans.'
"Mommy."
Jennie snapped back to the current lapse upon Jevin's call. She gazed down, only to see Jevin frowning, with eyes sparkling with worry.
"You hadn't taken a bite," he pointed out adorably. "Don't you like the food?"
The side of her lips curled up, planting her hand on top of his head. "I'm sorry for spacing out. It's just that I was thinking about hitting the gym. I can't eat too much since it's not good to have a full stomach before working out."
"Ohh..." Jevin rocked his head in understanding, taking her excuse at face value.
When she glanced at Lisa, Jennie flashed him a gentle smile. He simply looked at her, and it was obvious he was a little doubtful about her lame excuse. Still, he didn't press on the matter as he continued his meal.
"If you want to hit the gym, don't worry about us. We can wait for you until you're ready for our movie night," he said, as they had plans tonight as a family.
"Really?" Jennie maintained a smile, receiving a wide smile from Jevin.
"Daddy and I can wait in the theater room. I still have a few pages to read to finish the chapter," said Jevin to reassure her having some time for herself was alright.
Jennie spent her entire weekend with him, only hitting the gym once she tucked Jevin to sleep. The father and son were satisfied to have spent time with her more than they ever did in the past five years, but they were also worried she would find it exhausting if she didn't get a time out from them.
"I also need to make a few calls and check some papers," Lisa also informed her, backing up his son's claims. "Let's all just meet in the theater room in two hours?"
Jennie darted her eyes between her husband and son, smiling in satisfaction. If not for her growing concern at the killer on the loose in this very house, she would rather choose to be with them. Weekends were the only time Lisa was in the house all day, after all.
"An hour and a half is enough, but two hours it is!" her lip stretched into a grin. "By the way, Jevy, did you like the food? I made it just for you and Daddy!"
"Mhm. It's delicious."
With that being said, the family of three had their meal in peace, unaware of the chilling concern growing in her mind.
