It was early, and Alex groaned as lucy woke him up. He barely got any sleep the night before. The friend of Lucy, Snowy, had already left that morning for the same reason Alex had to drag himself out of bed: the Lady's birthday games. This was the one event where he needed to secure at least a top-four spot. Yet today, of all days, he felt utterly exhausted.
"Alex! Breakfast is ready!" Lucy's voice called for the second time, sharp and impatient.
"I'm coming," Alex mumbled, forcing himself to sit up. He shuffled to the dining table, still in his underwear and without his shaper.
Lucy frowned at him the moment he sat down. "I've told you before—you're not eating at the table in your underwear."
Alex rubbed his eyes and replied, grumpier than he intended, "I know, but I'll have to change soon anyway, won't I?"
"Excuse me?" Lucy's tone turned icy.
"Sorry," Alex muttered quickly, realizing he'd better not make things worse than they already were. "I'm just tired, that's all."
Lucy narrowed her eyes but didn't press further. "Thought so. Now go put some clothes on."
Sighing, Alex got up and asked, "What am I supposed to wear?"
Lucy pointed toward the wardrobe. "Open it and see for yourself."
Reluctantly, Alex swung open the doors to find an outfit that made his stomach sink—a skirt, an off-shoulder top, and stockings. He sighed heavily and began putting them on, trying not to let his frustration show. When he returned to the table, Lucy gave him a wide grin.
"Good girl!" she teased. "Except... you forgot your shaper. Go change properly this time."
Alex groaned loudly but did as he was told. When he returned again, Lucy gestured to the food. "Let's eat," she said, keeping her voice calm, though her patience was clearly wearing thin.
After breakfast, Lucy grabbed Alex by the arm and dragged him to a tall standing mirror. "Alex, today is the most important day of the year—the Lady's birthday. You have to look amazing. Unfortunately for you, that means choosing an outfit yourself."
Alex's mind raced as he glanced at the mirror. For a fleeting moment, he considered grabbing some normal boy clothes. But he quickly dismissed the thought; doing so would guarantee he'd lose. Swallowing his pride, he muttered, "Can you get me a pink princess dress?"
Lucy's eyes sparkled with mischief as she covered her mouth to stifle a laugh. "Oh, Alexis," she said mockingly. "I guess I was wrong yesterday—you do want to be a girl after all! Don't worry; I've got your back."
Before Alex could rethink its choice, she dashed off and returned with two dresses. One was a Renaissance-style pink gown with intricate lace and embroidery. The other was a sparkling pink ball gown that shimmered under the light.
Alex stared at them, torn. He finally chose the Renaissance dress, figuring it might better align with the Lady's tastes. After struggling to put it on, he stood in front of the mirror again.
"You look gorgeous!" Lucy exclaimed, clapping her hands. "But you're not done yet. Your makeup and hair need to match."
Alex sighed deeply but sat anyways. "Fine. What now?"
"Everything you need is in the drawers. You've got an hour to make yourself stage-ready."
He started with his hair, brushing it out and tying it into a simple ponytail. To add some flair, he braided two small sections on either side of his face and secured a pink flower clip in place. Then, he moved to his makeup.
