Author's Note: Inspired from a quote written by @sekaoj on Tumblr.

" I do not use the word home lightly.
So when I sigh it into the crook of your neck,
Believe that your spine is a timber frame,
Your kiss a welcome mat,
And your enveloping arms my front door "

———

A shiver crawled down your spine as you were called to the Commander's office. No other words had been spoken by the cadet who had replayed this information to you. Perhaps being worried wasn't a warranted feeling, but you couldn't help feeling a sort of impending doom as you reached the mighty, oak door of Commander Erwin's office.

There were muffled sounds mixed with the rustle of paper. Apart from the creaking of a chair, a gentle, "come in" flowed to your ears when you knocked.

You took a breath, holding the knob for a brief second and entered, surprised to see that there was another. Erwin looked towards you as you stood in front of his desk with a salute. He gave a brief nod towards your right, and you looked to catch the gaze of his Corporal and old friend. Erwin could tell by the look washed across your face that you were puzzled.

"At ease, Cadet (L/N)" he began, his tone firm and clear. You were pulled from your thoughts when you heard his voice, providing him with the attention he needed to deliver you the... good news, as he saw it. "I've recognized your valiant efforts both here and on the fields. It would be a shame— a waste of potential, for you to remain under the wing of a scientist."

The subtle movement of your throat had not gone unnoticed by the keen eyes of the man beside you. You were digging through the various meanings of what he could possibly be implying before reaching a conclusion so outlandish that you stumbled as you spoke. "You- you mean to work as a superior, sir?"

He smiled gently, with golden hues reflected off his silken hair. "Yes. I have decided that you will also be working directly alongside the Corporal, aiding and supporting him and his squad in any way you can."

With the mention of the Corporal, your eyes were naturally drawn to him. He was as everyone described him; there was a cold demeanor about him, his eyes wavered between the likes of battle and stoicism. Not to mention the aloofness that emanated from his body.

Could he possibly be someone you would get along with?  You wondered with casual interest.

Brushing off these impending assumptions of the man before you, you thanked the Commander and turned to look at your newfound comrade. Even with his arms crossed and a frown settled across his lips, a silent voice told you to smile and greet him.

"(Y/N) (L/N), it is a pleasure to work alongside you, Corporal" you said, eyes hovering over his features.

He had been observing you the moment you entered, though displayed no sign of how he felt about the matter. Just as you were going to pull away, given his lack of response, you were startled when you felt something warm yet firm within your palm.

It was him.

"Likewise" he said, and combined with his warm touch and surprisingly gentle voice, you were excited to see where this would lead.

———

"So that's what he called you in for, huh?" A woman said while scavenging through her paper-littered table with earnest. Then, in the midst of her thoughts, she turned. Perhaps she realized the gravity of the change, because with a pout on her lips, her hands rested firmly on your shoulders.

Her action startled you. "What's the matter, Hanji? Have you found something?"

"No, I just realized... if you're now working with him, then... then that means you'll no longer be my assistant" she explained, squeezing your shoulders a little.
