Author's Note: I originally wanted to write this as a Christmas gift for you all for Levi's birthday, but me being me, I couldn't contain myself so here you are! Hope you like it, and I'll write another when it is his birthday :)
To live in the Undergrounds meant sacrifice, and among those sacrifices was losing people along your way to achieving the dream of living above ground. That was exactly what Levi had to suffer through once he had made it out, but, he's lost two of his dearest friends that were with him during that time. As years have passed, he's beginning to forget how they looked, how they smiled, and how they laughed. Among everything he's forgotten, he's never known his birthday, deciding to bury the memory of his childhood, or at the very least, the life he ever had in the filth he never called home.
It was Christmas where he was currently staring out the window, watching the gentle falling of snowflakes. The weather peaked its coldest, but the cadets were all together in warm attires, provided by the funds that you and your noble family had generously provided. Warm sweaters, mitts, scarves, and coats were handed out, and all of them were grateful to receive such a wonderful gift.
Levi heaved a gentle sigh, creating a foggy smoke to appear on the window before turning around. He had discarded his Survey Corps attire, adorning a comfortable grey sweater, pants that fit his legs nice and warm, and within his hand was a nice cup of tea. He sat down upon the couch right beside you, who had a large blanket wrapped around your shoulder with a mug of hot chocolate.
"You're that cold?" he spoke lowly, wanting to talk to just you and no one else, despite the loud cheers and chantings of the cadets.
You nodded while looking at him, sipping on your drink while looking at the cadets partying happily by the fireplace. The fireplace was lit, illuminating a warmth that you've always craved of. "I suppose so, the headquarters needs some repairs but this'll do for now" you said. You peeked at Levi, seeing him in light clothing, despite how cold it still was inside. "Are you not cold? The others are wearing coats, even when they're inside."
"Tch" he scoffed lightly, leaning his back against the couch. "I don't need one" he answered.
You cocked a brow, thinking that there was enough coats, mitts and scarves to go around. What had happened to his? You made sure that he had his own pair of winter attire in case the weather would get colder, so where was it? You didn't think too much of it at the moment, since, he did say that he wasn't too cold, and not wanting to irk the stoic man any further, you continued to sip on your drink.
The moments passed by like a blur, with the cadets continuing to cheer and the sounds of singing resounding along the halls. Christmas was truly a time to celebrate with those you love, especially during the time when the weather made everyone have cold hands, and by huddling together in a room, lit by the fireplace with all your comrades, it was the way to go. And, there was also something Levi himself liked about this holiday. He, sadly enough, made his birthday this holiday, and for what reason? To hear the laughter of the cadets he looked over, no matter how much they irked him or made him rethink his cleaning techniques. He loved their smiles, the way they held the confidence, even if the smallest of things terrified them. And especially the Yeager kid, he disliked that boy the most, but he knew that he loved the boy like his own son.
Likewise, listening and seeing how happy they were when celebrating this day made him feel as though, deciding that this day be his birthday, could show how happy other people would be if he were born. The idea that even if he had lived such a cruel life in the beginning, he would always look forward to when those he cared about smiled that he was there, no matter how destroyed, stoic, aloof he may be...they'll always be happy that he's there with them.
