Luka's POV:
I strummed a song for her. I was glad Zoe had agreed to coffee and snacks. I invited her to my boat afterward. Yes, it is mine. I had purchased my boat within the last three years. It was time I had my place.
Mom stayed in her boat and Juleka was still living with our mother. Our father had married Penny much to our disappointment. We had hoped he would marry our mother. At least, those two were not arguing as much as they used to.
I recalled how Zoe had almost fallen when she climbed aboard the boat. I had caught her and carried her to safety. She sat on a seat and watched me. I sighed as she fell asleep.
The girl may be new to town, but she deserves happiness. I know that I deserve happiness. Could it be she likes me? Dare I hope she will be the girl to mend my heart? I saw her start to shiver as she slept. I put the guitar away and got out a blanket. I covered her with it. There, I thought sleep well, Buttercup.
I sat beside her, holding her hand as she slept. I did not know how, but I knew in that moment I would do all I could to bring her smile back for good. I did not hear the footsteps approach as I watched Zoe rest.
"Hi, Luka!" I looked up to see my sister smirking. "What is it?" I asked. "You two look so cute!" Juleka gushed. "Uh, I don't know what you mean," I said. "Ha, anyway, I came here to see if you wanted to join us," She said. "Us, I assume by that word you mean you and your boyfriend, Ethan" I replied. "Yes, but I see you are busy. I tell Ethan you are on a date with your new girlfriend," Juleka teased him.
"Shh, you will disturb, Buttercup's sleep," I said. I did not correct her on the girlfriend part because I wanted Zoe to be my girlfriend. I had not told her yet. I felt it was best to take things slow with her. I did not want to rush her.
I mean I was not sure she was even into me. Juleka waved to me as she left. I could tell she thought it was adorable that I had a nickname for Zoe.
I sighed. Twenty minutes later, Zoe woke up. "Oh, sorry, I did not mean to doze off like that Luka," She said. I saw her blushing. I did not want her to blush for anyone else. "It is alright, you looked like an angel, my Buttercup," I said.
"Well, I am no angel. I do like your music. Do you ever write any personal songs?" she asked.
"I used to, but I have not in a while," I answered.
"Well, if you ever need my help, let me know. I will be glad to assist you."
"Hmm, I might just take you up on the offer, Buttercup."
"The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies," Zoe announced. "yes, what of it?" I asked. "Well, the main character is a girl, named Buttercup," She stated. "Oh, is it now?" I teased her. "Yes, and she has a crush on a farm boy." She said. "Do you like farm boys?" I inquired. "Those boys are not my type." "What is your type then, Buttercup?" I asked. "You will have to wait and see," She said.
I got my guitar back out and played it some more. She stood up, folded the blanket, and placed it on the back of the chair. "Say, we should have a movie night sometime, "Zoe said.
"Sure, should I invite Ethan and Juleka to join us?" I asked. "No, I would rather it be just me and you," Zoe said. "I like the sound of that," I said.
"Next Saturday say 6 o'clock for the movie night?" I asked. "I am in," She said. I grinned. I was relieved. I wasn't sure if she would count it as a date, but I knew I would.
Zoe hugged me. I was surprised but hugged her. I wished it were a kiss, but dared not to say so. Where had that thought come from anyway?
She left waving to me, and I watched her depart the boat. I waved back glad she had not tripped making her exit. I would look forward to next Saturday more than she would ever know.
