Marinette's POV:
She wakes up feeling mortified. What was her grandfather thinking?
He had invited people to a Tea Party Wedding. It was secretly in her honor.
This was bad enough. To make matters worse she only had two weeks to prepare for it.
What was she to wear? What exactly did her grandfather expect to achieve with such an event anyway? Was he expecting her to marry some stranger was that it?
She could not say a word about it to her friends. She sighed. What would Alya think if she knew about this? How would she react? For that matter, what about Luka? She had been going steady with him for two years now. She had not told her grandfather since he looked down on musicians. She couldn't dump him to make anyone happy.
Sure family mattered. Did not her happiness matter more? How was she to let Luka know what happened without his thinking she had a say in it? Ugh. Her life was less complicated before she moved into her grandfather's place after the accident that claimed the life of her mother, and her father's abandonment after the fact.
It was not like her mother's father would understand. He was old fashioned, or as some might call him, "old school Chinese," which meant he felt everything he said was final.
She got up, dressed, and went downstairs unsure how to approach him.
"Good morning, my granddaughter, I trust you slept well," He says.
"Yes, grandfather, I slept fine," Marinette responds.
"Good, because in two weeks, you will make me proud," He remarks. Marinette listens as he explains what a Tea Party Wedding is all about and the traditions surrounding it. She felt even more freaked out when he was done talking than she was when she saw the text from Luka stating, "We need to talk," and the email that said something about the social to take place that involved her life.
"I sense you are stressed." "Yes, well, why would not I be? You never told me you wanted to find me a man on such short notice, or that you expected me to marry him without another thought." Marinette scoffs. "Granddaughter, that is no way to speak to me as your elder or grandfather. Besides, I am sure I know what is best for you." He replies.
"What's best for me, is that what you call it? Well, good to know!" Marinette yells.
"I already have a boyfriend, and I am not sure for how much longer." She spat out.
Marinette stands up then, suddenly no longer hungry. She exits the house to see what Luka's message means. She could only hope it didn't mean what she thought it might. She dreaded the conversation since it could go one of two ways. She could end up engaged to him, and avoid the entire two weeks later chaos by sneaking away with him to be eloped, or she might find herself dumped.
Either prospect bothered her terribly. She entered the park and sat on a bench.
"Marinette, we need to talk," Luka says.
"Yes, I know. You said as much in your text. Do you mind telling me what this is all about?" Marinette asks.
"We are good together, but that is the trouble," He answers. "What do you mean?"
Luka sighs. "I mean, I know you will never get your grandfather's approval of me, and I also know all about his proposition to get you a husband by having some traditional Tea Party Wedding Celebration. It is in two weeks, so I hear. I have a feeling it will be some other man he will approve. I also, know you will be able to get out of it. I know because well, Marinette, you have never been able to see without it being secret. I hate that."
"What are you saying, exactly?" "I am saying, that you need to decide right now, who is more important me, or your grandfather?" He asks. Marinette frowns. She thinks it is unfair of Luka to ask her to choose between her and her only grandparent who raised her since she was eight.
"I told him about you," Marinette states. "And?" Luka asks.
" I left before he could say another word. I am as disturbed about the invitations for the event, as anyone," She explains.
"Well, then tell him that," Luka shouts. "Don't yell at me, I already told him, and he accused me of disrespect. "
"I see, so I will make it easier on you, I will just go, and promise not to interfere in your life ever again, Marinette," Luka says.
"Luka, wait, don't go," Marinette pleads with him. "Sorry, Marinette, but I can't compete with him, and you know it. I can't have you unless you go against his wishes, and we both know you will not, So goodbye." Luka says. He kisses her cheek for the last time then, walks away.
Marinette feels tears spill down her cheeks as he leaves. She never told him, but she started to love him. She sobs at the broken relationship and at the dreaded start to a new one not even of her choosing. She sobs at the possibly of her husband to be being a man who hates her as much as she already hates him.
