Author's Note: The story, What if is a fanfiction story told mostly from Chloe's perspective, but some from Sabrina's, Adrien's, Marinette's, and Chloe's mother. I might add one from her father's perspective, too. It is a story about how Chole and others around her are impacted due to Chole's mother not being around much.
Chole's POV:
Sometimes, I wonder what it would have been like if she had never left. By her, I mean my mother. I was only six years old when she handed me a teddy bear and then climbed into the limousine with her suitcases. I was confused and greatly distraught. I loved her.
"Mom, why did you leave me?" I asked. I felt tears fall down my face. Had I done something that made her hate me? Is that why she left? I heard footsteps approach me and did not look up.
I felt someone embrace me with a warm hug. I kept on sobbing into his chest. "Chole, I am so sorry," he whispered. It was then that I realized it was my best friend, Adrien Agreste, who had come to cheer me up. He always knew when I needed him.
I brushed the tears away. "Thanks, Adrikins," I said. "It is Adrien, not Adrikins," he said.
Time skip!
Years passed, and we remained close friends. I always wished for it to be more. How could I? It was clear he did not feel the same about me. I admit it hurt. I was jealous when he spoke to other girls. I did not know how to react. I tried throwing dirt at them. That did not work. I tried to call them names. Adrien would stand up for them. Could you believe it? How dare he take their side?
He'd better not leave me. He could not leave me. Could he?
It was bad enough that Mom had left. I could not lose Adrien, too. Not when he was my one true friend. I mean, besides, Sabrina, that is, and she did not come along til second grade. I admit she was a bit of a nerd. She did not seem to mind that my mother lived far away.
"Do you think Adrien likes me?" I asked Sabrina this morning. "Chole, he is your friend, of course, he likes you, " She said. "I did not mean like that, I meant as a girlfriend," I said dreamily. " Chole, I am sorry, but I do not think he sees you in that way," Sabrina replied. I sat down on the bathroom floor at the school and wept. It had been years since I had cried.
Sabrina hugged me. I knew she was trying to help, but nothing could fix it.
Somehow, my relationship with Adrien was broken, too.
I wondered if Mom had stayed, would Adrien have liked me?
I returned to class with my head down. Sabrina did not say a word to the others. I was glad for this; they would not tease me.
I remained quiet for the rest of the day.
