Chapter 67: unknowns
Y/N’s pace quickened as she slipped through the streets, keeping her head low and avoiding eye contact with anyone passing by. Her heart raced, pounding in her chest as she made her way to a part of town she hadn’t been to in a long time. The dark alleyway loomed ahead, the shadows stretching long across the pavement.
She approached a figure waiting there, exchanging a quick, almost desperate glance with them. Without a word, she pulled out the cash she had taken from Finneas’ wallet and handed it over. The figure reached into their pocket and handed her something in return, but from the distance they were keeping, Billie and Finneas couldn’t make out what it was.
“What is she doing?” Billie whispered, her stomach twisting in knots as she watched from the shadows.
“I don’t know, but this isn’t good,” Finneas replied, his voice tight with worry. His fists clenched as he watched their little sister trade cash for something unknown.
The exchange was over in seconds, and Y/N quickly tucked the item into her hoodie pocket before hurrying away. Billie and Finneas trailed behind her, maintaining their distance but keeping her in sight.
Y/N walked with purpose, heading toward a part of town that was run-down and desolate. As she turned a corner, she disappeared into an old, abandoned building, one that had long been forgotten by the city.
“Where is she going?” Billie murmured, more to herself than to Finneas.
Finneas shook his head, his eyes focused on the door Y/N had just entered. “We need to follow her.”
They waited a few moments before cautiously making their way to the building. They slipped inside quietly, careful not to make any noise as they crept through the dilapidated hallways.
In one of the rooms, they spotted her. Y/N sat on an old, worn-out bean bag, staring ahead at the peeling walls. The space felt like a secret hideaway, a place she must have known for a while. There was a strange familiarity in the way she moved, like she had been there many times before.
She looked down at whatever she had traded the money for, but her siblings still couldn’t see what it was from their vantage point.
“What do we do?” Billie whispered, her voice trembling.
Finneas didn’t answer immediately. His mind raced with questions. Why was Y/N here? What was she doing in this forgotten place, alone, trading money for something in the shadows? He didn’t know if they should confront her now or wait.
Y/N continued to sit in silence, her eyes fixed on the bean bag beneath her as if lost in thought. She seemed small, fragile, and impossibly young in that moment. The weight of everything she had been carrying pressed down on her, and Finneas could feel it too, the crushing burden of her sadness, confusion, and desperation.
“She’s not okay,” Billie whispered, her voice breaking. “We have to do something.”
Finneas nodded, though his heart ached. “I know. But we need to be careful. We can’t push her too hard.”
As they watched, Y/N finally shifted in her seat, still holding whatever she had bought tightly in her hands. She looked lost, her eyes distant as though she was far away from the world.
They stood there, torn between stepping in and giving her space, but the sight of their little sister sitting in that abandoned place, alone with whatever darkness she was carrying, made them feel more helpless than ever before.
Y/N was slipping away, and they didn’t know how to pull her back.
