Chapter 20: Music and Munchies
As Y/N settled back into the rhythm of recording, the atmosphere in the studio became increasingly lighthearted. Billie and Finneas grabbed a few snacks from the kitchen—chips, fruit, and cookies—and settled in to fuel their creative session.
“Okay, let’s do this!” Finneas said, munching on a chip while adjusting the microphone. “You ready for another take?”
Y/N nodded, strumming her guitar again. This time, as she sang, she felt more at ease. But the lyrics still carried a weight, delving into the darker thoughts she’d been grappling with.
After finishing another take, Y/N looked up to see Billie and Finneas sharing a glance, their expressions a mix of admiration and concern.
“Wow, that was powerful,” Billie said, forcing a bright smile. “But maybe we could lighten it up a bit? You know, not everything has to be so… heavy?”
“Yeah,” Finneas added, his voice upbeat. “We can definitely add some fun harmonies! Let’s make it pop a bit more.”
Y/N bit her lip, considering their words. “I just want it to be real,” she said, a hint of uncertainty creeping in. “I feel like this is what I’m going through, and I want people to connect with it.”
Billie nodded, understanding the importance of authenticity. “That’s totally valid! But maybe we can balance it? Add some fun elements to the arrangement? We can still keep the essence of the lyrics while making it feel more uplifting.”
Finneas jumped in, his enthusiasm infectious. “Yeah! We can put in a catchy chorus that contrasts with the verses. Like, for every heavy line, we can follow it with something bright and hopeful.”
Y/N considered this, a small smile forming. “Okay, I like that idea.”
They went back to recording, and as Y/N played through the song again, Billie and Finneas joined in with harmonies that lifted the mood. The sound of their voices mingling with Y/N’s created a beautiful blend, adding layers of warmth to the piece.
During a break, they took a moment to enjoy the snacks they’d brought. Billie handed Y/N a cookie, grinning. “Here, try this. You deserve a treat for that amazing take!”
“Thanks!” Y/N said, taking a bite and savoring the sweetness. It felt good to share this moment with them, to feel connected.
As they munched on snacks, Finneas pulled up the recording software to edit parts of the song. “Let’s see what we can do with this,” he said, glancing at Y/N. “I think we should experiment with the tempo here. Maybe a slight increase to give it a little more energy?”
“Sounds good,” Y/N replied, watching as he clicked through the tracks.
Billie leaned over to Y/N, her voice playful. “You know, we should totally plan a release party for this song once it’s finished. We can invite a few friends, have some fun!”
Y/N’s eyes lit up at the thought. “That sounds awesome! I’d love to celebrate it.”
As they continued editing, Y/N noticed Billie and Finneas occasionally avoiding certain topics in her lyrics. They’d make lighthearted jokes or switch subjects whenever the song turned particularly dark. It was clear they wanted to protect her from the heaviness of the themes she was exploring.
Y/N felt a mix of gratitude and frustration. While she appreciated their care, part of her wanted to dive into those emotions with them—to share the weight of it all.
“Hey, can we talk about the lyrics?” Y/N asked, her tone sincere. “I know they’re heavy, but I don’t want to avoid them. This is what I’m feeling, and it’s important to me.”
Billie and Finneas exchanged glances again, and Finneas nodded. “You’re right. We should talk about it. This is your song, after all.”
Billie leaned forward, her expression earnest. “We just don’t want to see you hurt. But if this is how you want to express yourself, we’ll support that.”
Y/N felt a wave of warmth at their willingness to listen. “I appreciate that. It’s hard to put these feelings into words, and sometimes it feels like no one really gets it. But with you two, I feel like I can be honest.”
“Always,” Billie said, reaching out to squeeze Y/N’s hand. “We’re in this together.”
With renewed energy, they returned to the recording, Y/N pouring her heart into the music while her siblings supported her every step of the way. The session became a blend of deep emotion and playful energy, capturing the essence of who Y/N was—a young artist navigating her way through life, equipped with the love and support of her family.
As they wrapped up the day’s recording, laughter and music filled the room, reminding Y/N that even in the depths of sadness, there was always room for hope, connection, and the joy of creation.
