Looking for normal
The morning sunlight filtered softly through Y/N’s window, casting a warm glow that somehow felt gentle against her fragile spirit. She lay there, her body still as her mind slowly stirred awake, lingering on the comfort of having Billie and Finneas beside her last night. They had eventually fallen asleep beside her, offering her quiet company until the early hours. It was one of the first times she hadn’t woken up in a panic.
She looked over at the door, noticing it was cracked open just slightly, as if Finneas had left it that way to keep her from feeling too alone. She appreciated the little gesture—his and Billie’s sensitivity to her every need, even the unspoken ones. She wasn’t ready to talk about everything yet, and they hadn’t pushed her to. They seemed to understand in ways no one else could.
When she finally gathered the strength to get up, she shuffled into the kitchen where Finneas was quietly making breakfast, his movements soft and measured. The faint scent of coffee and warm toast filled the air, grounding her in the present moment.
“Hey, sleepyhead,” he said gently when he noticed her, his voice laced with warmth and concern. “How’d you sleep?”
She managed a small smile, one that felt more real than the ones she’d forced lately. “Better… thanks to you and Billie.”
Finneas’s expression softened, and he gestured to the table. “I made some scrambled eggs. Thought you might be hungry.”
Y/N hesitated, but she nodded and took a seat. It was such a small, ordinary act—sitting down for breakfast—but for her, it was another step toward feeling safe. Every bite felt like reclaiming a part of herself, a reminder that she was here, alive, and that her siblings were with her.
As they ate, Billie joined them, her hair mussed from sleep but her eyes filled with the same unwavering support she’d shown every day since Y/N came home. She ruffled Y/N’s hair as she sat down, offering her a reassuring smile.
They sat together in companionable silence, letting the morning fill the quiet spaces between them. It felt peaceful, like an unspoken promise that they would carry this weight together, no matter how long it took.
Eventually, Finneas broke the silence, his tone careful and soft. “There’s no rush, Y/N… but if there’s anything we can do—anything that would help—you just have to say the word.”
Y/N looked down at her plate, considering his offer. “I think…” She paused, gathering her thoughts. “Maybe… just a day out? Somewhere normal. Somewhere it’s just us.”
Billie’s face lit up. “We can absolutely do that,” she said, her voice warm and encouraging. “Whatever you want—today’s all about you.”
Y/N felt the weight on her shoulders ease just a bit. She wasn’t okay yet, but with them by her side, she felt the tiniest spark of hope that, maybe, she could find her way back to herself. And for the first time in a long time, she didn’t feel so alone in facing the shadows.
