"Come around the back so we can tag team him." The girl spoke, controller in her hand as she stared at the game on screen.
"Already on it.... and that's how you do it bitch." Vinny had done what she had suggested and they took out a member of the other team together.
"What's that, like 5 left?"
"I think so. Five or Six." Neither one of them broke concentration as a knock was heard at the door. Vinny only paused it when the door opened and a female's voice was heard.
"You couldn't come let me in?" A girl with burgundy hair now stood in the entry way of the living room. "And of course you couldnt." She drug out, rolling her eyes. "Do you do anything else? You're always on your game?"
Fay narrowed her eyes at the girl. What had Vinny ever seen in her? She was such a bitch. But Fay held her tongue for Vinnys sake.
"I'm sorry I stream for a living? And I'm sorry Fay and I have always bonded over this? What's your problem anyways?" Vinnys words had a slight bite but he was being kind. Too kind to someone who treated him poorly.
"First of all, we never do anything and I'm your fucking girlfriend. But you can make time to play video games with her?"
"What are you talking about Sabrina? I've taken you out three times in the last week. You've stayed the night half of this week... Fay is only in town for the weekend, so what I wanna play games and see her for one day?"
It wasn't like Fay was untrustworthy. She wasn't here to steal anyone's man. But she and Vinny had been friends since kindergarten and after she moved out of state she only came back a few times a year. Vinny wasn't going to miss his chance to see her.
"You know what? Fine. Spend time with this whore. But we're fucking over. You're such a piece of shit boyfriend and I can do better."
Before Vinny had the chance to say anything, Fay was already getting off the couch.
"Who in the hell are you calling whore? At least my tits aren't fucking hanging out. And you don't talk to him like that." Fay was in Sabrina's face by now, causing Vinny to spring up and try to get in between them.
"You guys, Stop. Sabrina, just go. Please."
"Me? Oh I'm fucking going. Don't worry about it." Sabrina had Fay's shirt in her grip for a second before Fay had pushed her. Sabrina was back in Fays face in seconds and before Vinny could stop it, the contact was already made as the sound of bone breaking filled the room; churning Vinnys stomach. Despite the blow to her face, Fay lunged at Sabrina and knocked her to the ground before throwing hit after hit.
"I'm done. You guys, knock it off!" Vinny yelled over them as he tried to break them apart, tugging on Fay. The second Fay gave in, Vinny pulled her behind them and put himself in the middle of the girls.
"Leave. Now." Vinny was pissed. Sabrina said nothing, only giving the two dirty looks before leaving.
"Vin.." Fay had started the second the door was closed.
"Why? Fay. You give me fucking heart attacks." Vinny sighed, turning to the girl to take her in. Blood was running down her face from her nose and she had some cuts and bruises that were forming.
"No one treats you like that with me in this world. Fuck that." Fay had always been pretty protective over her friends, Vinny included. And truth be told she was a bit of a trouble maker.
"God Fay." Vinny sighed as he headed to the kitchen, grabbing a bunch of paper towels before returning to the girl and gently pressing them to her face. "It wasn't even worth this." Vinny spoke quietly.
"First of all, she wasn't getting away with calling me a whore. And second, no one treats you like that, Vin. I'm serious." He closed his eyes as he shook his head.
"Let's just go." His voice was just above a whisper as he put his hand on her shoulder and led her towards the door.
"Go? Go where?"
"To the hospital Fay. If you're not already feeling this, then you definitely will be later tonight. At least they can give you something for it."
Vinny grabbed his keys on the way out and situated her in the car before taking off. Neither one of them said anything in the car, but their hands were linked over the center console. Fay didn't miss the occasional tear that fell down Vinny's face even in the dim light of the evening. It passed Fay off how someone could even dare treat him like that.
The amount of times they had to explain to nurses and hospital staff that it wasn't caused by domestic violence was insane. But Vinny sat in the chair, occasional tears still coming and his eyes red from them anyways. That paired with her broken nose caused concern. They told the story over and over again untill they were both sick of it.
But eventually they let her go with a prescription for pain killers and her nose splinted.
It was midnight when they got back to Vinny's and he had an anxious feeling in his stomach. Why did emotions always hit harder at night?
"Hey Fay...?" Vinny whispered as he watched her from the entry way of the living room. She cleaned up after herself from earlier and began to get her belongings together.
"What's up?" She paused to stand up straight and turn towards him.
"You can stay here... I mean, if you want to for the night. I wouldn't mind the company and it would save you a drive in the dark." The girl offered him a warm smile as she sat her bag down.
"I'd love to." Her voice was quiet to match his and without having to exchange words they both headed upstairs. Vinny went through his dresser and closet and grabbed her an old motionless tshirt and a pair of his basketball shorts to wear for the night. It was hard sleeping alone after a breakup and Fay was more than happy to be there for Vinny. After they had both cleaned up they slid into bed. Their arms ended up wrapped around each other as Fay rested her head on his chest.
"I'm sorry about your nose." He whispered, playing with her hair.
"I'm sorry about your heart. I know you liked her.. despite me not understanding how. You deserve so much better, Vin."
Quietness filled the room for a while, both of them holding onto each other for their own reasons. Vinny found comfort in Fay, while she found safety in him. Moving away from home hadn't been easy. She felt on edge and lost, like she was just wandering around most of the time. But back home, and around the people she held close such as Vinny, she felt safe and like she was where she belonged.
Vinny had really liked Sabrina, and while they hadn't even been together for a year it was long enough for Vinny to pour everything he had into their relationship. It was going to take a while to heal from and get over.
"It's gonna be okay." She whispered, hearing a change in Vinny's breathing pattern. She rubbed his arm gently. "Everything's going to be okay. You're going to get through this and over her. And there's going to be someone out there who's a million times better, just waiting to find you. You're an absolute catch and any girl would be lucky to have you."
"Thank you." He spoke through the lump in his throat.
"And I'll be right here through it all." She promised him. For now her focus was on getting him through the night, each one after would get easier and easier. But she was here for every step.
