After the lunch break, the courtroom buzzed with anticipation. As the judge reentered, the room fell silent once more, the air thick with expectation.
Judge : Court is now back in session. I trust everyone had a constructive break.
Krishna straightened in his seat, glancing at Vrindha, who gave him an encouraging nod. The local thug shifted uncomfortably and his earlier bravado diminished.
Judge : We will now hear the defence.
Judge said by turning to the thug's lawyer.
Judge : You may present your case.
The defense lawyer, a slick man with a confident demeanor, rose and cleared his throat.
Defense Lawyer : Your Honor, while my esteemed colleague has painted a vivid picture, the reality is that the allegations against my client are exaggerated. The land in question has been under dispute for years, and my client was merely acting within his rights.
Krishna felt a surge of frustration but remained composed.
Defense Lawyer : Furthermore, the villagers have not provided sufficient evidence to prove their claims of harassment or intimidation.
He gestured dismissively, attempting to undermine the villagers' credibility.
Defense Lawyer : We must remember that my client is a respected figure in this community, and his intentions were never malicious.
Krishna knew this tactic was all too common, and he leaned forward, ready to counter.
Judge : Thank you. You may now call your witnesses.
The defense called a few individuals, all of whom spoke in favor of the thug, painting him as a community benefactor rather than a villain. Krishna listened intently, aware of the strategy at play.
Finally, the judge turned to Krishna.
Judge : Would you like to cross-examine the witnesses ?
Krishna stood, his voice steady.
Krishna : Yes, Your Honor.
He approached the witness stand, a calm determination in his demeanor.
Krishna : You mentioned that my client's intentions were never malicious. Can you explain how you define "malicious" when the actions taken directly affected the livelihoods of hardworking villagers ?
The witness hesitated, clearly taken aback.
Witness : Uh, well, he just....
Krishna pressed on and his voice is growing stronger.
Krishna : These villagers were living in fear of losing their homes and businesses. How can one justify intimidation under the guise of community respect ?
