The Tale of Ely Senju

Chapter 4

Kakashi POV

A year has passed since Ely's first day at the academy and I was sitting with the Hokage on top of the Hokage tower. 'Kakashi, Ely's class will take their test in a few days to see who will become a genin. Iruna and I are convinced that Ely should also take the test. Ely is at the top of her class, despite her very young age. Do you know who she reminds me of?' I looked at him for a moment and wondered who he might mean. 'Do you mean Itachi Uchiha?' All of a sudden, he started laughing violently. 'Oh, I didn't mean Itachi. Ely reminds me a lot of you, Kakashi. Think about when you became a genin. I also strongly believe that she will become a chunin quite quickly.' That's right, I became a genin myself at the age of five and Ely is currently five years old. 'I won't tell her anything about the exam. She should find out from Iruna.' 'That's perfectly all right. Let's just let it be a surprise.' After the conversation, I went to the academy to pick Ely up. Once there, Ely was waiting for me on the swing again.

Ely POV

When I saw Kakashi walking towards me, I couldn't wait to tell him that we were going to take the exam in a few days that would determine whether we would become genin. 'Hello Niichan. Guess what we learnt today?' With a broad smile, I waited for Kakashi's answer. 'Mh... Let me think about it. Sorry, I can't think of anything.' 'We get to take the exam. I'm so excited, what if I don't make it.' 'Ely don't worry about that. You don't need to be nervous. If anyone can do it, it's you.' With a smile on his face, Kakashi tried to cheer me up. He succeeded for the time being.

The days until the exam flew by and Nao, Ryoko and I were now sitting there waiting for our turn. Ryoko and Nao were both ahead of me, so my nervousness grew more and more at that moment. Then I was called in. Grandpa Sarutobi, Sensei Iruna and someone I didn't know were sitting in front of me. Sensei Iruna stood up and said: 'Ely, please show us your transformation jutsu, your shadow clone jutsu and then there are three moving targets behind you that you should hit with your kunais. Good luck.'

So, I showed the desired jutsus and threw my kunais at the targets and hoped that everything was enough to pass. Grandfather Sarutobi came round from behind the table. 'Congratulations, Ely. You passed, even as expected, with the best results. Here's your headband.' I took the headband from his hand and thanked everyone present. I ran outside, where Nao and Ryoko were already waiting for me. They both showed me their headbands and I showed them mine. We went into a group hug and congratulated each other.

When I showed Kakashi my headband that evening, he was more than proud of me, and we went to Ichiraku's ramen together to celebrate.

The next day we were divided into our teams. Sensei Iruna stood in front of our class with a piece of paper in her hand. One team after the other was called out and then: 'So, team 4 consists of Ryoko Urio, Nao and Ely Senju.' When we heard this, we were very happy. We were in a team. We then waited on the roof of the academy for our sensei, with whom we would continue our training. An older man came walking towards us. 'You must be Ryoko, Nao and Ely. I am your sensei. My name is Jumo Horu. Why don't you introduce yourselves briefly, because I don't know you three yet.' Ryoko jumped up with great vigour and pointed his thumb upwards. 'My name is Ryoko Urio and I'm eight years old. I want to become a great shinobi one day.' Our sensei simply nodded in response. 'My name is Nao and I'm eight years old. I want to be able to protect the people I care about.' Again, he just nodded. Then it was my turn. 'My name is Ely Senju and I'm five years old. I want to live up to my name.' After my sentence, he just nodded. 'Then let's start training.'

A new chapter in my still very young ninja life was about to begin and I was more than ready for it.
