CHAPTER 06: A Hero's Trial
The day began like any other, but there was a palpable tension in the air. Class 1-A bustled with anticipation as All Might himself had announced he’d be overseeing today’s training. Even though you were excited to learn under the Number One Hero, there was a familiar knot in your stomach, the kind that reminded you of your limitations.
After yesterday’s quirk control exercise with Aizawa-sensei, you thought you had gained a little more control over your quirk, but your struggles still loomed large. Water was fluid, untamable at times, and even though you had made progress, you weren’t anywhere near where you wanted to be.
As you walked into the classroom, conversations buzzed around you about today’s training. Everyone was excited for what All Might had planned, and it seemed like everyone had a renewed sense of determination.
"Mizushima!" Midoriya’s voice called from behind you. You turned to see him jogging up, his ever-present notebook in hand.
"Hey, Midoriya," you greeted, offering a small smile.
"Are you ready for today?" he asked, his eyes practically glowing with excitement. "All Might’s going to be overseeing the whole thing, and we’ll finally get to apply everything we’ve been learning!"
"I guess so," you replied, your voice a little more uncertain than you intended. "I just hope I don’t fall too far behind. Yesterday was… rough."
Midoriya paused, tilting his head. "You’re doing great, Mizushima. I mean it. We all have quirks that come with their own challenges. Just keep working at it, and things will start falling into place."
You appreciated his words, but the doubt still lingered. Midoriya had challenges too—he was still learning to control his own quirk, but he had something you felt like you lacked. Confidence. A burning drive to be the best, to improve every day. You had that desire, but your fears always felt like they were holding you back.
---
The sound of the classroom door sliding open caught everyone’s attention. All Might entered with his usual larger-than-life energy, his smile wide as he stood at the front of the class.
"GOOD MORNING, FUTURE HEROES!" All Might’s booming voice filled the room, instantly commanding attention. "Today, we’re taking a big step toward your hero training. You’ll be participating in a battle trial to test your abilities in a simulated combat scenario!"
Excited whispers spread through the room. Battle trial? This was the real deal. Your heart raced with a mix of excitement and anxiety. You weren’t sure if you were ready for a full-on battle trial, but then again, this was why you were here—to train, to improve.
"You’ll be working in pairs!" All Might continued. "One team will play the role of heroes, and the other will be villains. Your goal is simple—heroes must capture the villains or secure the objective, while the villains must defend it!"
As he explained the details, your mind raced. You weren’t just going to have to rely on your quirk—you would need strategy, teamwork, and a strong resolve. And if that wasn’t intimidating enough, All Might added, "The teams have already been decided!"
Your breath caught as All Might began to call out the teams, pairing students together. You could hear the excitement from others, but your mind was focused on who your partner would be. Your heart pounded in your chest.
"And Mizushima will be paired with—"
Katsuki Bakugo.
Your blood ran cold. Bakugo? The hot-headed, explosive boy who always seemed to be several steps ahead of everyone else? He was one of the top students in the class, and you were still struggling with control. How could you possibly keep up with him?
"Bakugo, you’ll be on the villain team with Mizushima," All Might announced with that ever-present smile. "You’ll be defending against Midoriya and Uraraka, who will be playing the heroes."
Your stomach dropped even further. As if it weren’t bad enough to be paired with Bakugo, now you’d be facing Midoriya—someone who always saw the best in you. You didn’t want him to see you fail.
---
The training room was a massive, multi-level structure designed to simulate urban combat situations. As you and Bakugo stood on the villain side, preparing to defend the ‘bomb,’ you couldn’t help but feel the weight of the situation. Bakugo was already muttering to himself, likely planning some grand, explosive strategy, while you stood there, unsure of how to approach this.
"Don’t drag me down, Waterworks," Bakugo snapped, barely glancing in your direction as he tightened his gloves. "I don’t care if you’re struggling with your quirk—just stay out of my way if you can’t keep up."
His words stung, but they also lit a fire in you. You clenched your fists at your sides, determined to prove him wrong. You wouldn’t just stand by and let him handle everything. This was your chance to show you could pull your weight, even if it wouldn’t be perfect.
"I’ll do my part," you said, your voice voice is firmer than you expected.
"Tch." Bakugo rolled his eyes but didn’t respond. He clearly didn’t believe you, but that didn’t matter. You had something to prove—not just to him, but to yourself.
---
The battle trial began with a thunderous boom as Bakugo charged forward, his explosions lighting up the dimly lit training room. His aggressive approach was a sharp contrast to your own. You tried to summon the water around you, but it felt sluggish and resistant. The pressure of the situation made it harder to focus, and every time you tried to direct it with precision, it slipped through your control.
Midoriya and Uraraka were advancing quickly, their teamwork seamless. You could see them communicating through glances and hand signals, working together to strategize. You, on the other hand, felt like you were being left behind, desperately trying to keep pace with Bakugo’s fast and furious movements.
"Come on, Y/N! Focus!" you muttered to yourself, trying to ignore the rising frustration. But the water refused to cooperate. It felt like you were fighting against yourself, each movement taking twice the effort it should.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Midoriya making his move, rushing toward the bomb. Your heart pounded. This was it. You had to act now.
You raised your arms, summoning the water with as much force as you could muster. The liquid surged forward, but it was unstable, wavering in the air. Midoriya saw the attack coming and dodged with ease, his quick reflexes putting him out of range before the water could reach him.
Your breath hitched. You had missed. Again.
Before you could regroup, Bakugo’s explosions filled the air, knocking Midoriya back but not enough to stop him completely. Bakugo growled in frustration, clearly not pleased with your performance.
"You’re holding us back, Waterworks!" Bakugo yelled over the sound of his explosions. "If you can’t control that stupid water, just stay out of the way!"
His words hit harder than any physical blow could have. But instead of backing down, you gritted your teeth and forced yourself to focus. You wouldn’t let Bakugo’s harsh words define you. You wouldn’t give up.
As the trial continued, you kept pushing forward, struggling to maintain control of your quirk while trying to work with Bakugo’s fast-paced strategy. Every missed opportunity, every failed attack, only added to the frustration bubbling inside you. But amid the chaos, something else began to form—determination. A quiet resolve to keep going, no matter how many times you faltered.
Because deep down, you knew that every failure was a step toward improvement. And no matter how long it took, you would find your way.
---
A/N: Word Count: ~1350 words, that was intense! 😅 I know Bakugo was brutal in this chapter, but honestly, we all know that’s just how he pushes people. Do you think Y/N can handle the pressure of working with him, or will their teamwork be doomed from the start? She’s definitely struggling to keep up, especially with her quirk acting up under pressure. Next chapter, we’ll see how Y/N handles the rest of the battle trial and whether she can start making progress—especially with Bakugo breathing down her neck... Stay tuned!
