CHAPTER 25: Cradle of Discord
The night air felt heavy as you and Aqua Surge patrolled the quiet streets of Hosu City. The lights from the distant skyline flickered against the dark, casting long shadows across the alleyways. It had been uneventful so far, with no signs of trouble, but something in the air felt... off. You had been doing these patrols for the last few weeks, but tonight was different. Aqua Surge, usually calm and composed, had a tension in her stance that you couldn't ignore.
"Stay alert," she said quietly, her eyes scanning the street ahead. "Hosu City has had reports of increased villain activity. Keep your senses sharp."
You nodded, tightening your grip on your hero gear, trying to push down the knot of unease building in your chest. The city was quiet, too quiet, like something was waiting to happen. The streets, usually busy even at night, were nearly empty, the faint hum of distant cars the only sound. The tension in the air was thick, suffocating. Every shadow seemed darker, every alley deeper.
You adjusted your hero costume, the cool air biting at your face, and took a deep breath, your senses heightened. The sound of Aqua Surge's footsteps echoed beside you. She glanced around, sharp as ever, but even she seemed wary.
"You feel that?" she asked, her voice low, almost like she didn't want to disturb the stillness.
You nodded, the unease settling in your stomach. Something was wrong. You couldn't put your finger on it, but every instinct you had told you that something was coming.
Aqua Surge stopped for a moment, scanning the rooftops and the alleyways. Her voice dropped further. "There's something in the air tonight. Stay close. We don't know what we're walking into."
Suddenly, the ground beneath you trembled. It was faint at first, barely noticeable. But then, in the distance, there was a loud crash, followed by another tremor, then screams. Your heart leapt into your throat as the sound of chaos filled the air.
"Nomus!" Aqua Surge shouted. "Get ready!"
Before you could react, a Nomu burst from the alley ahead of you, its grotesque form towering over the street. It moved with terrifying speed, its fists crashing into the ground and sending debris flying.
You barely had time to dive out of the way as the Nomu's massive arm slammed into the street where you had been standing, cracking the pavement. Aqua Surge didn't hesitate. With a sharp movement of her arms, she summoned a wave of water from the air, slamming it into the Nomu with enough force to send it crashing into a building.
"Wavebreaker, focus on the fires-extinguish them with your quirk!" Aqua Surge commanded, her voice sharp and clear even amidst the chaos.
You snapped into action, pulling moisture from the air, guiding streams of water to the growing flames erupting around you. The fires hissed and sputtered as the water doused them, but it was overwhelming. There were too many Nomus, too much destruction happening all at once. Each time you extinguished a fire, another would ignite nearby. The ground trembled again as another Nomu tore through a building further down the street, the sound of shattering glass ringing through the night.
Your heart pounded as you struggled to keep up, your arms aching from the effort of maintaining your water flow. Every step you took was accompanied by the roaring of the Nomus and the panicked cries of civilians trying to escape.
As you fought to control the chaos, your mind wandered, thinking about Midoriya and Iida. You knew they were somewhere in the city tonight, patrolling just like you. The knot of worry in your chest tightened-were they okay? Were they safe?
Suddenly, your phone buzzed, pulling your focus for just a split second. It was a message from Midoriya, short and urgent, the kind of message that sent a chill down your spine.
