CHAPTER 78: Moments of Truth
The sounds of the festival blurred into the background as you and Izuku stepped away from the crowd, the cool evening air enveloping you both. The excitement from the concert still buzzed through your veins, but now there was something else hanging between you—something heavier, yet filled with possibility.
You both stopped under the canopy of a tree, standing just out of sight of the bustling crowd. Izuku seemed to be fidgeting with his fingers, his shoulders tense as he glanced at you and quickly looked away, his face tinged with pink.
“Izuku...” you began, but before you could finish—
“I—” he started at the same time, both of you halting in sync.
For a brief moment, the air seemed to freeze, your hearts pounding in your chests. You both blinked at each other, realizing you’d spoken at the exact same time.
You couldn’t help but smile a little, a nervous laugh escaping. “You go first,” you said quickly, your cheeks flushing as you tried to push down the excitement bubbling up inside you.
But Izuku was already shaking his head, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “No, you go ahead. I’m pretty sure... we’re thinking the same thing.”
You swallowed, heart racing. This was it. You took a deep breath, your words coming out in a rush. “Izuku, I—I like you. A lot. More than just friends.”
His eyes widened slightly, surprise flashing across his face. But then—almost like it was the most natural thing in the world—his lips curled into a soft, relieved smile. “I... I was going to say the same thing.”
The two of you stood there, frozen, a quiet understanding settling between you. The world seemed to pause as the weight of your words lingered in the air.
It was Izuku who broke the silence first, stepping a little closer, his voice steady but filled with emotion. “I’ve wanted to say this for so long... I just didn’t know how.”
Your heart skipped, but you didn’t need words. You just gave the faintest nod, your eyes never leaving his.
He leaned in—slowly, carefully, like giving you one last chance to change your mind. You didn’t. You couldn’t. Your eyes fluttered shut just as his lips met yours.
It was soft. Gentle. Like a whisper shared between hearts. Not hurried. Not dramatic. Just real. And full of everything you’d both been too afraid to say until now.
When you finally pulled apart, there was a moment of silence again. But this time, it was warm. Full. The kind of silence that only comes when nothing more needs to be said.
Izuku laughed under his breath, a little breathless. “So, uh… does this mean we’re—?”
“Yeah,” you said, smiling, your forehead resting lightly against his. “We are.”
Somewhere in the distance, you could hear the festival roaring back to life. But here, under the soft glow of the lights and the quiet comfort of each other’s presence, it felt like your own little world. And for the first time in a long time, everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.
---
The crisp air of November brought a change, both in the season and within the walls of U.A. A month had passed since that unforgettable night, and though the pace of life remained relentless, the bonds between you and your classmates—especially with Izuku—grew stronger with each passing day. The intensity of their hero training was unyielding, but so were the moments of laughter, camaraderie, and connection that colored the days.
