Daenys was on her way into the castle when she was stopped by Jace. 'Daenys, you have to do something. Mum's acting weird. She's not herself anymore.' 'I've noticed that too. I'll see what I can do.' The look in Jace's eyes was desperate and almost hopeless. Daenys had to do something. So Daenys changed her plans and made her way back to Vermithor. She would make her way to Cregan's camp.
Vermithor flew quite high up and Daenys had a good view. She took a good look at everything from the back of her dragon. When they arrived at Cregan's camp, Daenys got off Vermithor's back and walked through the camp. Before she could enter Cregan's tent, he stopped her. 'Eny, it's nice to see you. Let's go for a walk and then you can tell me what's on your mind.' 'Hello Cregan.' Together they walked through the camp until they came to a halt by a river. 'So, what's going on?' 'You must have heard about Rook's Rest. I tried to warn my mother. Aegon had already told me about his brother's plan. While Aegon was slightly injured, Rhaenys was more seriously hurt. But she is recovering. My mother now wants to give two of my dragons to other dragonriders, because she needs more dragonriders and the fact that I have three dragons doesn't quite sit well with her. Since this war started, she has changed and not for the better. I don't know what to do.' 'That doesn't sound good. None of your dragons would let anyone else ride on them. They would rather turn that person into ashes. As for your mum, you'll think of something. There's something else though, isn't there?' 'I'm worried about Heleana. She's now alone in King's Landing with Aemond. I'm afraid something will happen to her.' Cregan turned to Daenys and hugged her. 'If she's anything like you and Aegon described, she'll be fine.'
Daenys stayed at the camp late into the night. She talked to many of the men who accompanied Cregan and looked at the equipment. As soon as night fell, she mounted Vermithor's back and returned to Dragonstone. In her room she got ready for bed and before going to sleep she wrote a quick letter to Aegon. The next morning, she walked through the corridors of the castle and heard voices. She followed the voices and saw her mother standing there with several people.
'Thank you for coming here in such large numbers at my invitation. Two of you will soon become real dragon riders.' Daenys could not and would not listen to any more of this. She had to talk to her mother and things couldn't go on like this. On her way to Vermithor, she ran into some knights and greeted them. 'You miss Silverwing, don't you? You'll see her again soon. I don't intend to stay here indefinitely. I hope my grandmother is feeling better.' Daenys stroked Vermithor's muzzle. Her mind was racing with so many things. When she heard footsteps, Daenys turned round to see her mother running towards her. 'Daenys, where are Meraxes and Silverwing? We talked about this yesterday.' 'They're not here and won't be any time soon. No one will even touch my dragons. Do you understand?' 'You know how important it is for me to conquer my throne. It was stolen from me! So, I guess you can say goodbye to two of your dragons.' Vermithor, who was standing behind Daenys, became increasingly agitated, because nobody behaves like this towards his rider. 'You've changed completely since this war began, mother. This is not you! If you carry on like this, you'll lose many more family members. This is not the mother, Queen, that so many would follow. Go inside yourself and think about whether this path is really what you want.'
With these words, Daenys climbed onto Vermithor's back and flew off. Vermithor landed on an island and Daenys got off his back. Daenys signalled to Vermithor that he was welcome to go hunting. As soon as Vermithor was out of sight, another dragon suddenly landed in front of her. Vhagar! Aemond got off the back of his dragon and walked towards Daenys. 'You really messed up our plan and seriously injured my dragon. It's a wonder she can still fly, but we're both out for blood. For your blood!' 'No matter what you plan, it won't do you any good. You won't get away with it. I'll do anything to protect my family, even if it costs me my life. You can't intimidate me, it won't work on me.' 'Then you will burn!' Aemond turned back around and climbed back onto Vhagar's back. Vhagar lifted off the ground and made a small turn before descending. Her talons already turned dangerously in Daenys' direction. His plan was not to burn her, but for Vhagar to tear her apart with her talons. Vermithor wouldn't make it back any time soon.
Was this her end?
