Pae's POV
when I wake up Kai is still asleep. I barely slept last night, all I could see was my biggest fears and my worst memories. all the people I have killed, all the things I have done and all the things I could lose. I sit up and I look down a Kai. he is on his stomach with his arms wrapped around a pillow. I look at the scars on his back and arms. a part of me thinks that even though his father was an abusive piece of shit, he will never forgive me.
I watch him sleep for a few more minutes before I sneak out of bed, put on a pair of pants, boots and a tank top and I quietly leave the room. I pull on the vest Adena gave me as I walk through the castle halls. I want to go to the slums. I want to see the fort. I need to see the fort. they probably wont let me out but it is worth a try. I stop in a hall when I start to see paintings of all the rulers of Ilya. I stop when I see a painting of Edric and Myla. there is a small metal sheet under the painting that reads.
'Edric Azer and Myla Azer were the king and queen of Ilya for many great years. their child is Kai Azer. our new great king of Ilya is Edric's son. Edric was murdered by Paedyn Gray and Myla died shortly after. God rest their souls.'
as I read I notice it says nothing about Ava and I also see that I am on it. I know Kitt wrote that so I would see it. I turn my attention to the one right next to it. Kitt's blonde hair and perfectly painted suit makes me roll my eyes.
I look at the paintings again before I continue walking. when I get to the castle doors I see Mak trying to get past the imperials but they don't budge. "if you aren't allowed to leave they aren't going to let you through" I say the obvious.
he turns and when he sees me he rolls his eyes. "yeah I know that"
"then why are you still trying to get through the doors?" I ask
"why are you here anyways?" he scoffs
"well I was going to go to the slums but it seems we aren't allowed to leave" I turn and I start walking away and for some reason he starts following me. "why are you following me?"
"where are you going?" he asks walking next to me.
"I already told you, I am going to the slums" I say calmly
"I thought we weren't allowed to leave"
"we aren't but there are other ways to get out besides the front door." I keep walking until I get to the sewing room and after I take 2 cloaks I toss one to Mak and I put mine on, pulling the hood over my hair. he just keeps following me as I walk out to the gardens and make my way through the grass in the direction of the slums.

Kai's POV
when I wake up Pae is not in bed. I look around thinking that she is in the room somewhere but I don't see her anywhere. just as I am sitting up there is a knock at the door. I look at the clock and I see it is 9:45. Jesus I slept in. I stand up and pull on a shirt as I walk over to the door when I open it I see an imperial. "yes?" I ask annoyed
"um sir, his Highness King Kitt wants you to go and talk to the woman who poisoned Miss Paedyn Gray. his exact words were 'Tell my damn brother to get that woman out of my fucking dungeon, hang her, kill her, let her go I don't give a shit' sir" he says
I sigh and rub my eyes "yeah ok I will be down in a few minutes." I say closing the door. I have been avoiding this but what the hell, I'm just going to get this over with.

when I get to the dungeon I freeze. I see Charlotte, the maid who I thought I was in love with when I was 17. Charlotte was the first woman I ever did IT with. we had been having sex for a few months when my mother found out and told my father. he was furious and threatened to fire her entire family if we didn't stop. her father was even more pissed than mine because his daughter was ruined or something.. I guess no man would ever marry her because I took her virginity. when I broke it off she went all psycho on me and told me if I stopped inviting her to my room she would kill the woman I tried to marry. I guess she wasn't kidding, that makes a lot of sense.
she is sitting with her back to the cold stone wall not even looking at me. "what the hell is wrong with you?" I ask as I approach her cell.
she looks at me for the first time. her brown eyes are filled with anger and her dark blue and black hair is a mess. "I told you I would kill the woman you try to marry. looks like I failed though" she scoffs
I am so pissed I don't even know what to say to her. how could she do this? what is her problem? I get that she is angry but that is no reason to try and kill a woman who did nothing to her. I just want to kill her and.... I have killed people who have done nothing to me. I have killed people just because I was angry. "banish her to the scorches" I tell an imperial as I walk out and I can hear Charlotte cursing me.

Pae's POV
"are you sure they aren't going to like.. kill us or something when we go back?" Mak asks for the 5th time as we walk through the slums with our hoods over our hair and most of our faces.
"well they won't kill me because I am marrying their boss but they might kill you I don't know" I answer honestly.
"what!"
"I'm kidding Jesus calm down." I say even though I am not kidding. we continue walking in the direction of the fort when I hear the familiar high pitched pained scream. a child is getting whipped because they stole something. Mak hears it too and we both take off in the direction of the screams.
there are people everywhere and in the middle is a little girl getting whipped. she looks like she isn't even 7 and she is screaming for help and bleeding. her parents are being held back by 4 imperials while they try to help their baby girl. this reminds me of all the times I got whipped. before I can think I rush over and stand in front of the girl stopping the imperial. "move!" he yells I look behind me and I see the little girl crying on the ground. all I know is I am not moving "I said move bitch!" the man yells again
"the fuck did you just call her?" I hear his familiar voice and I look over to see Kai walking through the crowd of people. he looks at what is happening and I can practically feel the anger coming off of him when he looks at the crying little girl. "you go get a healer now!" he yells at one of the imperials holding back the girl's parents and when he is gone the girl's parents rush over. they hold and comfort their daughter as she cries in pain and Kai comes over. he kisses my cheek before crouching next to the girl and once the healer is close enough he uses the power and heals the little girl. "if any of you ever hurt a child again I will kill you myself" he says glaring at all the imperials.
"yes sir" they say quickly walking away as Kai finishes healing the little girl. her parents thank him and she gives Kai a huge hug. then they thank me and the girl gives me a hug. I hug her back and I can see Kai smiling at me. the people clear out and Kai takes my hand leading me over to where Mak is standing.
"what the hell are you guys doing here?" Kai asks
"I was here to go to the fort" me and Mak say at the same time and I give him a shocked look. she took him there? he has been to my home?
