Miranda POV
"I don't know. I don't know what to do. I don't think she or her husband wants to adopt me. I don't want to burden them, and I don't know if I'm ready to live here. I don't know what to do! They're so busy with all the touring and everything but, I don't want to go back to the orphanage." I froze, standing outside the door to the dining room.
I was going to go check on them, they had stayed behind a long while while the rest of us went into the living room.
I listened for a long while and began to think. I really wanted to adopt her as my daughter....but I didn't know if I was ready for that responsibility. And I also didn't know what Blake would think....
The rest of the night went by pretty slowly, they told me all sorts of things about their kids and I talked to them a bit about Lacey. I didn't want to confront her, because other than that she seemed to be having a fantastic evening.
They were getting ready to leave, but I didn't see Lacey or Kyle anywhere. I had checked the dining room, but still didn't see them.
I finally found them by the front door, wrapped up in a kiss. I cleared my throat and saw Lacey blush a deep red. I laughed slightly and Kyle said goodbye to Lacey.
"Thank you Mrs. Shelton." Kyle said. "Yes, thank you for the wonderful meal." Mr. And Mrs. Benson said. I smiled, "No problem! Stop by anytime." "Thank you." Addie said, coming over to me.
She gave me a huge hug. I picked her up and grinned, hugging her back. "You're welcome, baby girl." Uh oh...looks like KP rubbed off on me.
I set her down and watched the Benson's leave. I turned and Lacey was nowhere to be found! That's odd.... "Lacey?" I called, rapidly searching the house. "I want to talk to you." I called. There was still no answer!
When I came up with nothing on the bottom floor, I walked to her bedroom. I heard someone crying! "Lacey?" I called, quickly trying to turn the doorknob. It was locked! "Damn it." I muttered.
"Lacey! Please open the door." I said, terrible images rapidly going through my mind. She could be hurting herself! But we just had a nice evening.... "Lacey? Please. Please open the door." I pleaded, tears coming to my eyes, terrified.
Finally, she opened the door. I saw he suitcase standing up in the middle of the room. She had tears on her face. "What're you doing?" I asked, that seemed to make her flinch back.
She didn't say anything, but turned her back to me. "Lacey. Please." I said, grabbing her shoulder. She didn't turn around.
I roughly forced her to turn around, instantly regretting it. She stared me in the eyes and looked terrified. "What's wrong? Did he hurt you?" I asked in a rush. She shook her head at me.
"Did I?" I asked slowly, waiting for the answer. She didn't say anything. "I'm so sorry if I did. You know I never would on purpose." I said, pulling her into a hug. When she didn't hug me back, I knew something was wrong, something big.
"Please talk to me." I begged, holding her at arm's length. "I thought you were mad at me earlier. You didn't really talk to me." She finally said. I froze, confused.
"Why on earth would I be mad at you?" I asked, completely lost. "That's what I was trying to figure out. You didn't talk to me." She said with a shrug.
"Oh. I'm sorry, I was just so wrapped up in the evening." And thinking about adopting you...."That's all. I promise I'm not mad. Now what's all this packing about?" She asked me.
"N...nothing." She stuttered. I let it slide, "Just please don't leave. Don't leave." I said more sternly the second time. I watched her unpack her things and knew there was more to the story.
"I love you. Now get some rest." I said, hugging her one last time, she hugged me back.
I went downstairs and into my room, crawling into my bed, I picked up the book on my nightstand. It was a mystery book that was very good.
I heard something hit against the house and shook awake. Grabbing my pistol from my nightstand drawer, I got up, creeping away from my room.
I quickly made it up the stairs, fearing something had happened to Lacey! I opened her door and saw that she was laying in her bed, sound asleep. I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Oh thank god. I'm so glad you're okay." I breathed before spotting the open window. As quietly as I could, I closed the window and spied something on the window seat in her room.
It was a rock. Why the hell would she have a rock? And where did it come from? Maybe she has a rock collection...?
I shook off the thought and walked back down the stairs. I moved more slowly, I was exhausted from only a few hours of sleep.
I settled back into bed, as I was shutting my eyes, I realized, the rock hit the house! That was the noise I heard!
I got out of bed, grabbing my pistol and phone before I crept toward the back door. I turned on my flashlight and walked to below her window. There were two footprints in the dew!
Then I thought: Kyle only lived a little ways away from here. That's who it had to be. I smiled at the thought, pushing away my gut feeling, and went to walk back inside. The door was locked! "Are you kidding me?" I groaned, walking to the front door.
It was also locked! "Damn paparazzi making me lock my doors all the time..." I muttered. I tried the windows, but neither one would open!
Accepting defeat, I called Lacey on the home phone. She answered after the 4th call: "hello?" She sounded terrified.
"Can you let me in?" I asked. "Who is this...? I'm gonna go get my mother..." Lacey said groggily. I smiled at the word: Mother.
"Umm that might be hard to do, considering she's at the front door. It's Miranda. Can you let me in?" I laughed.
"What the hell are you doing out so early?"she muttered, clearly annoyed. "Please watch your language. And let me inside." I said, trying not to laugh.
"Okay Miranda." She said. A tiny part of me wishes she'd call me mom.
I heard the door unlock and walked inside. "Thank you Lace." I smiled. "Yeah. Please let me sleep." She said; I couldn't help but notice she looked freaked.
"Is everything okay?" I asked gently. I didn't want to push her away. "Yes. Just dandy. It's 3:00 in the morning and my lovely friend Miranda is walking outside around the house like an idiot." She snapped back.
"Don't talk to me like that." I snapped. "I can talk to you how I want." She snapped back: "You're not my mother." I felt my rage take over.
I grabbed her roughly by the shoulders and shook her: "who has fed you, got your arm stitched up and not thrown you back on the streets!? Who invited your boyfriend and his parents over to surprise you!? Who...loved you when you didn't love me back!?" I snarled, seething. That seemed to hit home. Lacey began to cry. "Please. Please don't hit me."
I didn't say anything for a while, dropping my arms. What happened to the Lacey I had gotten to know for the past few weeks?
"I'm not going to hurt you. And no matter how furious I am right now, I could never hit you." I stalked away to my room. Slamming the door, I wondered if Blake was right.
