Lacey POV
I heard something hit my window and groggily sat up.
I opened the window and a rock flew into my room, a wad of paper attached. I looked out below and saw a dark figure walking into the distance.
I uncrumpled the paper and read it. "If you know what's best for you and her, she cannot adopt you. You better leave, you have been warned."
I shook, setting the rock on the windowsill. I heard footsteps outside my door and jumped into my bed, holding the paper. I rolled over, facing the window.
"Oh thank god. I'm so glad you're okay." Miranda said, breaking my heart. I had to push her away so she wouldn't get hurt. So she wouldn't adopt me. I felt awful doing it, she was so nice to me!
The window slammed shut, and I heard Miranda's footsteps stop, she had found the rock! I clutched the note in my hand tightly.
I jumped when I heard the phone ringing. I didn't even know she had a home phone! I ran downstairs and grabbed it off the counter.
"Can you let me in?" Someone asked. "Who is this...? I'm gonna go get my mother..." I said, trying to sound like I lived there and had a family
"Umm that might be hard to do, considering she's at the front door. It's Miranda. Can you let me in?" She laughed. I wanted to laugh so hard; but remembered the warning, whomever wanted to hurt was was watching.
"What the hell are you doing out so early?" I muttered, trying to act annoyed. "Please watch your language. And let me inside." Miranda said sternly.
I undid the three locks on the door, wondering what she was doing outside! "Thank you Lace." Miranda grinned. "Yeah. Please let me sleep." I said, looking around worriedly into the darkness
"Is everything okay?" She asked. This was it, I had to keep her from adopting me. And I had to do it loudly so whoever wanted to hurt us could hear. "Yes. Just dandy. It's 3:00 in the morning and my lovely friend Miranda is walking outside around the house like an idiot."
"Don't talk to me like that." Miranda said, a chill leaking into her voice. "I can talk to you how I want." I snapped back: "You're not my mother." I knew that would hit home. I knew it would let the person watching I didn't want her as a mother, but I knew it would break Miranda's heart too.
Miranda grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me, even though I was already shaking: "who has fed you, got your arm stitched up and not thrown you back on the streets!? Who invited your boyfriend and his parents over to surprise you!? Who...loved you when you didn't love me back!?" She looked like she was going to hit me! I had a flashback to the man hitting me at the orphanage and cowered, crying: "Please. Please don't hit me."
Miranda dropped her arms and glared at me. I think I feared her silence more than I did her words.
"I'm not going to hurt you. And no matter how furious I am right now, I could never hit you." She walked inside and I followed. She slammed her door so hard, it rocked the house.
I crept back to my bed, feeling like a complete jerk. But if it meant saving her, that was fine.
The next morning I woke up, Miranda's door was closed. I knew she wasn't going to talk to me for a long while, if ever.
I sat at the kitchen bar, wondering what I was going to do. I put my head in my hands and started to sob.
I wanted to make thing right, and I felt like an awful person, but I just couldn't. I couldn't let them kill either of us.
