Lacey POV
I sat in the kitchen, staring at my mason jar. Blake had already left and Miranda was downtown somewhere, doing an interview.
I sighed, wondering when they were going to give me away. I felt bad, because they were mega stars, they were bound to be too busy for me. I got off the chair and wandered down from the back porch. Miranda had made me promise that I wouldn't wander off too far.
I decided against walking to the barn, because I would probably end up getting lost. Climbing back on the porch, I grabbed my mason jar and opened the creaky door. I made sure it was locked before walking into the kitchen. I slipped the jar carefully into the sink, it made a metallic clang as I set it down.
I wandered around the kitchen and into the living room. was an old acoustic guitar. It looked like any regular guitar, but it had cracks, dings, rubs, and holes in it. It looked like it could've been fished out of a dumpster.
I looked around before walking closer. I picked it up and realized that it was a real wood neck, not one of those plastic coated ones. I smiled as I looked at it, holding it by its neck at arm's length before putting the curve on my thigh. It had a curved, pink, acoustic capo on the top. I slid it onto the first fret.
I began to strum absentmindedly while I sat down and settled into the couch. Before long, I was strumming and singing, just like I used to do in the orphanage. I was playing and singing "Silver Lining" by Kacey Musgraves before I knew it.
"Woke up on the wrong side of rock bottom
Throw a lot of pennies in a well
That done run dry
Light up and smoke 'em if you have 'em
But you just ain't got 'em
Yeah ain't we always looking For a bluer sky? "
I smiled and went to sing the next line, but accidentally did my C chord on the wrong fret! I laughed at myself before moving my fingers and trying again. I started to sing the chorus:
"If you're ever gonna find a silver lining
It's gotta be a cloudy day
It's gotta be a cloudy day
If you wanna fill your bottle up with lightning
You're gonna have to stand in the rain
You're gonna have to stand in the rain "
I smiled and started to try and harmonize with the guitar.
"Hoo hoo hoooo
Hoo hoo hoooo
Hoo hoo hoooo
Hoo"
I sighed and stopped strumming, wondering when Miranda was going to be back. "Lemonade keeps turning into lemons, and you wear your heart on a ripped, unraveled sleeve.." I jumped back against the couch, almost dropping the guitar!
Miranda was leaning against the wall and staring at me with a triumphant smirk. "Hey! You scared me!" I yelled at her, still surprised. She laughed and sat down next to me. "I see that you found my guitar from high school?" She said, gesturing to it. "Oh, I'm sorry...I didn't know..." I trailed off. "Hey, it's okay! That sounded great!" She beamed. "Thank you." I blushed deep scarlet.
"Where did you learn to play like that?" She asked me. I shrugged, "When I was younger one of the "mothers" taught me in the orphanage. Kyle also helped me with different ways to strum." I said, shying away from her. She turned more toward me, while I set the guitar on the couch. The thoughts that I had had in the back of my head came back to the front.
"What is it?" She asked me. "Huh? Nothing." I lied. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Miranda narrow her's. "Sure it isn't. Really, what's up?" She asked, softly. I just shook my head. I was probably just wasting her time with more drama. She got up and gave me some space. I put my head down.
What if she didn't want me? I wasn't some dog that she could adopt and feed, I was an actual person, and she probaby didn't have time for that with all of her fame. She didn't ask to adopt me, and I didn't even know if she liked me. Blake left yesterday and she's been busy all day today. Tears started to well up in my eyes. I wiped them on the back of my hand, hoping that she didn't see. I didn't belong anywhere, especially not here. I was a nobody, lost to the world.
Before I could stop, I started to cry, harder. I only wanted a family to call my own! Was that too hard to ask for? "Lacey! Sweetie, what's wrong?" She asked me, alarmed. I heard fast-paced footsteps as she scrambled over to me. I felt arms hug me tightly. I didn't move, except when I shook with sobs. She rubbed my back carefully and held me at arm's length.
"I'm not mad at you for touching my guitar if that's what this is about." She said with a sad smile. She looked like she was about to cry. All I could do was shake my head. "What's wrong, then, Lace? You can tell me anything. Don't be afraid." She said, the last part a whisper.
"I...I'm just scared." I managed to choke out between sobs. "Of who? Who is scaring you?" She asked, softly, but I could tell she was going into her "momma bear mode." Every woman seemed to have that, whether or not they actually had a kid. I just shook my head. "Is it Blake? Was it Kyle...? Or was it....me? Did I do anything to hurt you?" She asked quietly.
I shook my head again, that seemed to be the only thing I was capable of doing, apparently. "Of...Going back to the orphanage...That you don't like me anymore. Happy?" I snapped, closing into myself. Miranda looked at me for a few moments, I could feel her eyes on me. "Please tell me you're not serious." She said, sarcastically. I jumped and looked over my folded arms to her.
"What..?" I asked, confused. "That's what your afraid of? I wouldn't've helped you that day, I could've just kept on walking, but I didn't. I wanted to help you." Her voice raised. She took a minute to calm herself down before going on: "You reminded me of me, when I was younger. I was really lost, just like you. Not physically, but just who I was. I was always different." She admitted.
I didn't say anything, as my mind went in and out of focus. "You...you don't want to give me up?" I asked, shocked.
"Of course not. I love you, as my own kid. Don't you get that? Hard head?" She laughed, hugging me tight.
I smiled, thinking that I might finally have a home after all!
