Miranda POV
I waited for Lacey to start the water before dashing to the phone. I knew what I had to do.I called Blake's phone, hoping he would pick up. When he didn't, I left him a message.
I made two teas in Mason jars and walked out the screen door. I set them down on the chairs and walked back inside. Glancing at the clock, I realized it was dinner for the furbabies!
I ran inside and grabbed all the bowls I could carry in my arms and filled them with food. I heard the back door opened and turned around, expecting to see Lacey, but instead, I saw my husband!
"Blake..?" I asked, confused. "I was coming to surprise you...and why is there a random teenager in our house?" He seemed more confused than upset.
"I left you a voicemail. Let me go feed the dogs before I tell ya. These are getting heavy." I said, walking into the yard. I walked to the dog runs and put down the bowls. I locked the gate and walked back to the house, wondering what was going to happen.
I reached the backdoor and opened it carefully. I walked into the kitchen and up to Blake. He had his phone to his ear. I waited for it to end, nervously.
He didn't say anything for a few moments. He walked over to me and I stood my ground. He looked like he wanted to say something but didn't.
It was a few moments, I looked away to the clock on the wall. "Ran." He said finally. I glanced at him. "She's gone."
I froze. "WHAT!?" I yelled. I took off toward her room and ripped the door open. It was empty! I ran around the house for a good 30 minutes before turning up with nothing.
Then, I realized that we were similar. I went to tell Blake where she was, but he wasn't in the house either!
I grabbed my black helmet and ran outside. I hopped onto one of our ATV'S and sped toward the barn.
I tore the door open and sighed in relief. Lacey was leaning against one of the stalls, seemingly asleep.
I crept over and shook her. "Lacey. Lacey! Wake up!" She jumped and punched me in the jaw! I reeled back and she jumped up. "Ohmygosh! I'm so sorry!"
I grasped my jaw in pain. She had the fight or flight look in her eye; to my surprise, she ran toward me. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to do that." She said, cowering. She was shaking!
I felt all my anger subside. "It's okay. I didn't mean to scare you." I said, still holding my jaw. She held her face in her hands.
I started to rub her back, gently. She peeped her eyes up over her hands. "Is he mad at me?" She asked me. "If he's mad at anyone, it's probably me." I sighed.
"I'll go. It's okay, I'm used to it. I didn't mean to cause any trouble. I'll go." She said, starting to walk toward the doors. "Lacey, wait." I said. She broke my heart! This girl has known nothing but orphanages and fake homes.
"You didn't cause any trouble. A few...mishaps...but no trouble. It's okay, I promise." I said. I carefully crossed the barn and gave her a hug.
She froze at first and gave me one back. "I haven't had one of these in a long time." She said, breaking my heart more.
I lead her to the ATV, my jaw still throbbing. I gave her my helmet and we rode toward the house.
I led her through the screen door and into the house. "I want no more running after this." I said, sternly.
"Yes ma'am." She said, nervously. I went into the kitchen and grabbed a Baggie and some ice. I held it to my jaw and sat on the barstool.
"You have a heck of a swang!" I said, looking at Lacey. Her face turned white. "I'm so sorry." She said, panicked.
"It's okay." I said, waving her off. She smiled slightly and sat next to me. I heard the door open and Blake strolled into the kitchen.
"There you are!" He said, looking at Lacey. "I'm sorry I startled you." He said, smiling at her. "It's okay." Lacey said nervously.
She gave Blake a tiny smile and turned away. Blake shot me a glance that said "we'll talk about this later." "Oh! We still need to deliver your letter!" I said, hopping up.
My jaw was now numb. I put the ice in the sink and grabbed her letter off the counter. "Want to come with us, Blake?" I asked. He shook his head, "Nah, I'm gonna get unpacked. You girls go ahead."
We hopped in my truck and sped off.
