— one hundred nine

CAROLINE WAS ON A ROLL, the vampire hadn't mourn since the death of her mother was announced, since then, the group of friends have been at her aid for as long as she needed them to be. Kate admired how strong she was being, Caroline hadn't shed one tear since she her mother's life slip away.

Caroline was always two steps ahead, she got her and her three girl friends a dorm room so that they could all be together, she managed to host a Thanksgiving dinner during the chaos of Kai Parker and now, she was putting on a brave face for their benefit.

"You've all asked what you can do to help." Caroline spoke up, holding a notepad, everyone had gathered around the study room after the vampire had called for a meeting. "There are five days worth of projects on here, we are going to do them in one, we can break the rules and cut through the red tape. I expect my mom to be properly celebrated and buried by the end of the day."

"Sure, Care. Whatever you need." Matt declared, nodding.

"Katie, you're coming with me." Caroline's smiled down at the vampire. Kate hummed. "Okay, where we going?"

"Casket shopping." Caroline beamed brightly, lips parted as she looked around the room. "Let's move."

Kate glanced over at Elena, who met her gaze and shrugged, the woman rose and grabbed her coat and followed Caroline out the house. "You drive. I send my car to Jeremy." Kate says, stepping down the stairs.

Caroline spun around. "Jeremy! I forgot to put him on my list of people to call." She groaned. Kate patted her back.

"It's okay, Elena called him."

"Your mother was such a vibrant woman, even after your father ran off with that man."

Kate rushed over to the dark haired woman and Caroline, gently smiling at the woman with a nervous chuckle. "Thank you, Mrs. McGruder. I'm sure we'll see you at the funeral."

Caroline held a puzzled look as she let Kate drag her away from the funeral home. Kate sighed. "Well, welcome to the world of awkward sympathies. That's why you have to be prepared with your responses. I recommend at least three."

Caroline shook her head. "I don't know you survived this."

"Your responses will be different for each category of people in your life— friends circumstance, casual acquaintances, loved ones." Kate exhaled, coming up to the car.

"Ethan told me he loved me."

Kate came to a halt, she turned slowly, her mouth gaped open. Caroline pressed her lips together. "I didn't really get a chance to say anything when you called me, and I want to talk to him about it, and I don't know if he'll tell me how he truly feels, I don't think he'll be honest, you know, not today."
