AUTHOR'S NOTE: This story is based on Hozier's cover of 'Do I wanna know'. If you want to understand this story properly and really get into it, I advise listening to the song first (also it's just amazing and beautiful so listen to it anyways 😝)
~CONTEXT~
It was an accident, Something curated from an out of control argument that turned out to be a devastating moment in your life.
You and Austin had gotten into an argument - as you found to do so more often than usual - and it had spiralled. It was originally about how close he was to a female friend of his, and how your boundaries were being disrespected no matter how many times you emphasised them. Both of you were riled up, growing more and more irritated and had enough of this petty argument that came up a million times. In a moment of anger, Austin shouted at you, cursing you out and saying incredibly horrible things to you. Thins he wouldn't ever normally say to anyone, let alone you. It was awful; watching the man you believed was the love of your life scream such nasty things at you, seeming to not care how you felt in that moment. Tears welled up in your eyes as you simply stood there and listened, each word shattering your heart further.
Once he finally stopped and calmed down, he turned to look at you, only to be met with the heartbroken look on your face. Guilt wrapped itself around him immediately, filling his entire being and burying itself deep into his core. He felt sick to his stomach, and resented himself for saying such vile things towards the woman his heart cherished the most. Neither of you said another word. You turned your back and walked out of the apartment, leaving Austin to sit with his regret alone.
You never spoke again after that.
~CURRENT~
It's been 3 agonising months since that day. What he said to you has passed, his words dissipating from your mind and dissolving into the abyss. What hasn't left you though, is the deep rooted feeling of your love for him. Your heart calls his name every night and every day, aching to see him once more. Aching to go rushing back to him, however your self respect is stronger and stops you from doing so. As hard as it is, you can't disrespect yourself by being the one to fix things. He messed it up, not you.
You're currently curled up in bed - how you spend most of your lonesome nights these days - blankly staring at the TV. It's off, no channels playing and no Netflix show to keep your mind occupied - a blank TV screen only showing you the reflection of the dimly lit bedroom you reside in. Your mind is elsewhere, occupied with a million thoughts at once, making it impossible to pinpoint one specific thought. You sit there, unmoved, simply staring forward. Like a statue.
Suddenly, your body jolts at the sound of someone frantically knocking on your apartment door. You haven't spoken to anyone is days, you haven't invited anyone over and you're not expecting a delivery, so who could be visiting you this late at night?
Unenthusiastically, you remove yourself from your bed and slowly leave the comfy confines of your bedroom. Almost in a zombie like state, you wonder through your apartment until you find yourself at the front door. Your hand hovers over the doorknob for a split second, hesitation floating around you as you debate whether you should open it or not.
Taking a deep breath, you finally decide that you need to know who's come to bother you at this ungodly hour. As you slowly open the door, you're stunned to see who it is.
Austin.
He's panting, soaked through with a look of desperation plastered across his features. His eyes are red and puffy - most likely from crying - and hold the look of a pleading puppy. You've never seen him in such a state, and you can't even find it in you to lie and say it doesn't break your heart. It does.
