Wedding Day:
Maddie's POV:
I'm sitting on a bench listening to the waves crashing against the cliff, twiddling my fingers in my lap. I have about an hour before I get into hair and makeup, I'm not nervous per se. This has always been the end goal, and now that we're here it doesn't feel real.
I told Billie I wanted to be traditional, but she was knocking on my hotel door today and wouldn't stop knocking until I let her in. She ended up going back to her hotel room, and then I snuck down here just so I could be alone for a minute.
Billie: "Shorty!"
I turn around and see Billie jogging over to me.
Billie: "What are you doing?"
Maddie: "Looking at the water?"
Billie: "No, what are you doing down here by yourself?"
Maddie: "Looking at the water?"
Billie: "You coulda waited, I would've come with."
She sat down on the bench by me.
Billie: "You good?"
Maddie: "Yes ma'am." I smiled.
She looked at me skeptically.
Billie: "What's your favorite type of body of water?" She's biting back her laugh.
Maddie: "Definitely the ocean, but like a little calm stream? That's nice too."
Billie: "Noted."
Maddie: "Why do you ask?"
Billie: "I just wanna know everything about you."
Maddie: "What's your favorite type?"
Billie: "Ocean, but I love houses that have like their own ponds in the backyard."
Maddie: "That's fire too, yeah I like that."
She smiled.
...
Billie's POV:
Maddie and I both got called into hair and makeup at the same time, and we're not in the same room. Seeing Maddie down by the water threw me off, I was worried that she was doubting or debating what we were doing. I think she was just genuinely looking at the water.
I'm sitting in the chair while I can hear the hair dryer and the smell of hairspray fill the room. But I don't focus on that, all I can think about is Maddie.
"This is happening. I'm really marrying her," I said low enough to where my hairdresser couldn't hear me.
Married. The word feels like a soft punch in the gut, We've come so far. From the awkward friendship stage to the fights to hold on to each other, to the promises that we've made to each other.
I opened my eyes and I saw my reflection in the mirror, a reflection I've seen every day. Today it feels different though, almost like I'm asking myself, "Are you ready for this?"
Everything has led to this moment. The record label, the breakup, the quiet nights spent apart, the endless fear that maybe—just maybe— we weren't meant to be. And now? Now it's all behind us. Maddie is here. Maddie is real. And today, I'm going to promise her forever.
My hair gets finished and my makeup gets finished shortly after, I put on my dress with the help of my mom.
Maggie: "You're so beautiful."
Billie: "Thank you, Mommy," I kiss her cheek.
Maggie: "Maddie's waiting on you, to walk down the aisle together."
