Heavy.
That was the only word to describe how everyone's heart felt. It had been a few weeks since Beth's death and nothing was going right. Soon after the hospital the group tried to help Noah find his family. When they arrived it was clear something bad happened but that wasn't the end.
Tyreese got bit.
One of the changed people from Noah's community had caught Tyreese off guard. The group safely got him out of the place and onto the road. He died soon after. In a nice shaded area of the woods they held a burying ceremony for him. No one was expecting to lose another person, especially this soon. Everyone was loosing hope. The only plan everyone decided on was to get to DC, if Eugene didn't know the cure then maybe somebody else would. Their journey was slow as gas was running low, food was sparse, dry water sources, and the sun was always blazing down.
They needed a miracle.
Adrianna sighed as the rest of the group came into view. "Oh shit." Their expressions spoke all that she needed to know. Daryl, Sasha, Maggie and herself had been sent out separate to try and find some sort of food and water. Of course, no luck.
"It's been a day and a half." Maggie dropped her head as they slowly walked their way back empty handed. "They haven't found anything either." She said looking over the exhausted group.
"How do y'all know?" Sasha asked.
Adrianna shrugged. "Just do."
"How much longer do we have?" Maggie whispered and it was barely audible.
Sasha sighed. "Sixty miles."
"I wasn't talking about that."
Silence overtook them as they continued their walk back. The question was a serious one. With no food and no water, they wouldn't be able to continue much longer.
————————
Hours had passed and they were now down all cars. They had no more gas left so everyone was left on foot. The journey to DC just got way harder. The group moved slow due to the heat exhaustion and lack of food and water. Adrianna, Daryl, and Rick stood at the front of the stumbling group. A small Judith was laid out in the woman's arms and the soft groans of the walkers way back behind them was all of their motivation to keep moving.
"We're not at our strongest." Rick said looking back at the walkers. "We'll get em when it's best. High ground or something like that." He added and then looked to an uneasy Daryl. "They're not going anywhere." He nodded to the man. The couple stayed silent as the group continued their horrid journey. "It's been three weeks since Atlanta." Rick whispered looking over to the very obviously pained and exhausted couple. "I know you guys lost something back there." His voice was soft and careful as he spoke.
Adrianna and Daryl stayed quiet as Judith began to stir in her arms. The child let out a cry and Adrianna cringed at the sound. "She's hungry." She whispered handing Judith over to Rick. Her head felt heavy, exhaustion was taking its toll.
"She's okay." Rick nodded as he shifted Judith to a more comfortable position. "She's going to be okay."
"We need to find water and food." Daryl grumbled.
"We'll hit something in the road." His eyes shifted to the bright sky. "It's gonna rain sooner or later."
"I'm gonna head out. See what I can find." Daryl stopped and slid the gun off his shoulder. He handed it to Adrianna without another look. The last few weeks had been difficult for them and their communication. They stayed close by each other but few words had been exchanged.
