The aroma of garlic and oregano hung heavy in the air, a testament to Addy's simmering pasta sauce. She hummed a low, contented tune as she diced tomatoes. From the living room, a muffled babbled followed by Tim's voice. She rinsed the diced tomatoes and added them to the sauce, the sizzle a comforting sound. "How's it going?" she called out, her voice laced with affection.
"She's giving it her best shot," Tim replied, a hint of amusement in his tone. "But I think she's more interested in putting everything in her mouth, than tummy time" he says with a laugh.
Addy chuckled. "Perfectly respectable activity at her age." Addy says with a smile. A few minutes later, Tim appeared in the kitchen doorway, Ellie nestled securely in his arms. Her chubby cheeks were flushed, and a thin trail of drool glistened on her chin. Her big blue eyes, so much like Tim's were fixed on Addy.
"She's exhausted herself," Tim said, gently bouncing Ellie. "Think she earned a break from tummy time."
"Absolutely," Addy agreed, wiping her hands on a dish towel. "Let me take her. You look like you could use one too." She says to him. She reached for Ellie, the familiar weight settling comfortably in her arms. The baby immediately nuzzled into Addy's shoulder, her tiny hands clutching at her shirt. Addy walked over to the couch and got comfortable before feeding Ellie.
"I love how you know all of her cues" he tells her as he watches Ellie's eyes close. Addy looks over at him and nods "I try my best, feedings are hard because she is actively being breastfed." Addy explains. But she was trying to pump more so Tim could bottle feed her. Tim nods his head in agreement.
Tim's phone started to ring as Addy looks over at him in confusion. It was nearing 7 pm, and they weren't expecting anyone. Tim answers his phone as Addy watched his face become serious "Who's this?" He asks. His eye brows furrowing together. Addy could hear the stress lacing in his voice "Understood. I'll be there in 20.". He hangs up the phone. Addy sits up "What's going on?" she asks watching as he stands up from the couch. He walks over to the key bowl and retrieves his keys "I gotta go, I'm sorry" he says putting his shoes on.
Addy stands up carefully holding Ellie "Wait what? Where are you going?" She asks becoming worried and anxious. Tim looks at her with a guilty expression "I can't. I'll call you when I can" he says opening the door.
Addy looks at him "But the baby?" She starts off but was interrupted by him walking out of the house. The sound of the door closing followed by silence. Addy just stares at the door as she was utterly left in confusion.
