Howls of wolves began a chorus. One by one, a mixture of different notes joined the group. Soon all the notes unified and the majestic, magic melody began. The sound seemed to course like adrenaline through my veins. My diaphragm widened and my lungs found a freedom unknown. I ran faster and faster. It was a surreal feeling and calmed me extensively.
Suddenly, my adrenaline zipped out and my breath was taken away. I tumbled to the dewy forest floor. My leg landed painfully on a tree root. Without paying much regard to my extremity I hopped back up and pressed myself against a tree.
Two wolf-bloods were nonchalantly sitting there just inside the forest line. They looked as if they were enjoying their howling but with all my stumbling and falling they were now both looking right at me.
Then, the weight of my foolishness came rushing to my realization. What am I doing? It's full moon night, I am supposed to be locked up in my room!
It was much too late now. Both wolf-bloods perked up and with their humongous paws they padded their way over me.
With a new surge of adrenaline I spun around only to stop abruptly, yet another wolfblood was standing there, looking far too excited about this wimpy creature called human. Hem’Lar had better been telling the truth when he said that humans tasted detestable.
I wanted to scream but held it down. Who around would hear it and come to my aid? It would only attract other wolves who'd all share in the feasting of my flesh.
Turning in yet another direction, I pressed my heels in and ran with every bit that I had. Whether it was my imagination or not it seemed as if the wolfbloods were cackling behind me. Laughing at my attempts to flee. None of them would even need to break sweat to kill me. Heck, none of them needed to do as much of a jog to catch up with me.
Yet, they toyed with me.
As I ran one if them nipped my jumpsuit, tearing a small grape-sized hole in the back just above my pocket. I yelped at the painful pinch and tried to run faster. I was already worn out. I was not used to exerting this amount of stamina and energy when I had so little sleep.
One of them barked and pounded on me from behind. Flailing I stumbled on nothing and fell. Spinning around and seeing them mere feet in front of me.
Then, a low grumble cut through the melody that was in the air. Not just in the air but I felt it in the ground as well. My fingers absorbed the vibrations and my heart ticked with anticipation. The wolves in front of me immediately lowered their ears and stepped back. With a reluctant hesitancy.
In a state of confusion and fear I turned to see the source of the growling. A shudder ran through my tense muscles.
The wall of G'por'r's pack-house stood 30 meters yet that was not what caused me to shake. A mere ten meters in front of me were the same glowing, diamond eyes I had seen a month ago. The puffy, black wolf-blood simply sat and stared at me. As if he had been waiting for a while for this very moment.. Having just seen more a few wolfbloods in their wolf form made me realize this one was humongous. It was like comparing a cow to a bison. Or in the dog sense, a Rottweiler to a Mastiff.
Sure Hem’Lar left me by myself and I now was suffering. I wanted to hate the man so much. I wanted to grab a stick and beat the weebie-jeebies out of him, I wanted him to be sorry. Sure, Bal'Tiq got exiled and now I was left more defenseless than ever. He had in his own hothead way been protecting me. I needed that and he was gone. Sure, Mes'Mu seemed hell-bent on making my life miserable and all the Omegas alike. Making me feel like the scum they saw me as. But yet, in all that, this wolf was in front of me like a neon sign that I had not been completely left alone or forgotten.
