"Why do you even bother showing up if you're going to half-try every drill?"

Your voice rang across the gym, sharp enough that a few heads turned. Tsukishima, towering as always, shot you a withering glare over the top of his glasses.

"Excuse me for not throwing myself on the floor like a certain king who thinks hustle makes up for lack of brain cells."

Heat flared in your cheeks. "You're unbelievable!"

"And you're loud," he deadpanned, turning his back on you.

The rest of the team exchanged looks. Yamaguchi rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh, maybe we should..."

You didn't hear the rest because you were already marching after Tsukishima. "Don't you dare walk away from me! You think you're smarter than everyone else? Newsflash- being tall doesn't make you better!"

He stopped, slowly turning back with that trademark smirk that made you want to throw a ball at his face. "Did I hit a nerve, short stack?"

Your fists clenched. "I hate you."

"I'd return the sentiment, but that would mean I cared in the first place."

The air between you practically crackled. Finally, Daichi sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Enough. Both of you. Go grab the spare volleyballs from the locker room."

You started to protest, but Sugawara was already nudging you towards the door. Tsukishima groaned but followed.

The moment you stepped inside the locker room, the door shut with a heavy clang. A very distant click followed.

You whipped around, "wait-" the handle wouldn't budge.

From the other side, muffled voices chorused. "You're not coming out until you work it out!" Laughter trailed off as footsteps retreated down the hall.

You blinked. "They didn't."

"Oh, they did," Tsukishima muttered, leaning against the lockers like he had all the time in the world. "Congratulations, we've officially been babysat."

You rounded on him. "This is your fault. If you weren't such a colossal jerk-"

"My fault?" He scoffed, cutting you off. "You're the one who picks fights every practice."

"Because you push everyone's buttons!" You snapped. "You act like you don't care, like volleyball is a waste of time. And it drives me insane, why be on the team if you don't put in all the effort. It drives me crazy because-" You stopped yourself, breathless.

"Because what?" He pressed, golden eyes glinting.

You looked away, heart hammering. "Because it matters. To all of us. And I know it does to you as well, you just pretend it doesn't."

For once, Tsukishima didn't immediately retort. He studied you, lips pressed thin. The silence stretched until you almost regretted speaking at all.

Then he muttered, quieter, "you think I don't care?"

The vulnerability in his tone caught you off guard. You glanced up, and for the first time, his expression wasn't smug or cold- it was uncertain.

Your voice softened. "I think you're scared to show that you do."

Something shifted in the air. His posture stiffened, and he pushed off the locker, closing the distance between you in slow, deliberate steps.

You backed up until cold metal pressed into your shoulders. His gaze never left yours, sharp and searching. "You talk like you know me."

"Maybe I do," you whispered.

The room felt too small, too charged. His height caged you in, his hand braced against the locker just inches from your face. You could feel the heat radiating off him, smell the faint mix of detergent and sweat clinging to his jersey.

For a heartbeat, neither of you moved. His eyes flickered down to your lips before darting away. The breath caught in your throat.

The room shrank. His breath mingled with yours, warm and uneven. He was close enough that you could see the faint pink at the tips of his ears, the way his golden eyes darted down to your lips and back.

Your voice trembled. "Are you going to prove me wrong?"

Something broke in him then. With a frustrated sound, he leaned down and captured your mouth with his.

The kiss was rough at first- clumsy, desperate- like he hated that he wanted it so badly. You gasped, hands pressing his chest, but instead of pushing him away, your fingers curled into his jersey, dragging him closer.

He groaned against your lips, deepening the kiss. His other hand came up to cradle the side of your jaw, thumb brushing your cheek as if he was afraid you'd vanish. The metal of the lockers was cold against your back, but his body was all heat, pressing you firmly in place.

Your head spun. This was Tsukishima- the boy who insulted you daily, who made your blood boil- and yet, kissing him felt something inevitable, like the fights had only ever been leading here.

When he finally pulled back, both of you were breathing hard. His forehead rested against yours, eyes closed. "You're... infuriating," he muttered, but his voice was rough, unsteady.

You let out a shaky laugh. "Takes one to know one."

And then-before either of you could think better of it-he kissed you again.

This time it wasn't clumsy or rushed. It was deeper, hungrier, his lips molding to yours like he'd been waiting for this far longer than either of you realized. You melted, arms sliding around his neck. He made a quiet, almost pained sound when your fingers brushed the back of his hair, pulling him even closer.

The kiss dragged on, messy and heated, until you were both breathless. Every time you tried to pull back, he stole another, softer one, unwilling to stop. His mouth lingered against yours, his thumb still tracing circles on your cheek as if he couldn't let go.

It was dizzying-fire and ice, hate and want-all blurring into something that left you trembling.

Finally, when you managed to tear your lips away, your chest heaving, he leaned his forehead against yours again, still so close his breath fanned your lips. "You drive me insane," he whispered, voice ragged.

Your lips brushed his when you murmured back, "Right back at you."

You might've kissed him again, and again, if not for the sudden rattle of the lock.

The door swung open.

You both sprang apart, faces flushed, lips swollen. Yamaguchi's grin stretched ear to ear as the rest of the team peeked in behind him. "Sooo? Work it out?"

Your face burned hot. "We're fine!" you snapped, storming past them into the gym.

Behind you, Tsukishima muttered, low but unmistakable: "Yeah. Fine."

But when you glanced back, just for a second, his eyes were still on you-dark, lingering, and far too dangerous.
