You didn't mean to fall for your brother's rival.
It just... happened.
Kita Shinsuke was everything your brother wasn't: calm, steady, polite. And after months of sneaking around - study sessions, quiet walks home, soft little kisses behind the school - the two of you had gotten good at hiding it.
until today
Game day was already tense - mostly because your brother and Kita had been sniping at each other since warm-ups.
Nothing dramatic; just their usual low-key verbal daggers.
"You ready to lose?" your brother mutters as they pass in the hallway.
Kita doesn't even look at him. "I don't plan on it."
"Cocky, aren't you?"
"Confident," Kita corrects calmly.
You split off from them to find a seat. You barely get two steps before a guy from school cuts in front of you.
"Hey, Y/N," he says, way too confident. "Looking cute today. Wanna sit together?"
"No, thanks." You move past him.
He follows.
"Come on, don't be like that," he insists, grabbing your arm lightly. "Just a seat. I'll keep you company."
"I said no." You yank your arm back and keep walking.
He still trails behind. Persistent. Annoying. Loud enough to draw attention.
You turn a corner - straight into Kita, who had been heading toward the locker rooms again. Your brother is a few steps behind him, still complaining about something.
Kita's eyes immediately drop to your tense posture... then to the guy hovering behind you.
The shift in him is instant. Controlled. Quiet. Sharp.
Before he can speak, the creep pipes up-
"Damn, you didn't tell me you were meeting a whole volleyball team."
Your brother rolls his eyes. "Dude, she said she wasn't interested-"
The creep scoffs. "I wasn't talking to you."
Your brother steps forward, bristling. "Say that again, I dare y-"
Kita lifts a hand, stopping him without even touching him.
He steps in front of you.
He doesn't raise his voice. He doesn't posture. He doesn't threaten.
Just a low, unmistakably dangerous:
"Is he bothering you?"
You swallow. "Yes."
The creep laughs. "What are you, her guard dog? Back off, man."
Your brother takes a step. "Okay, now I'm gonna-"
Kita cuts him off.
"I said," he repeats, a touch firmer, "is he bothering you?"
You nod.
Kita turns fully toward the guy, eyes cold and steady. "If she told you no, then your conversation ends there. Leave."
The guy tries one more time: "You can't tell me what to-"
Kita doesn't move. Doesn't blink. Just tilts his head slightly.
"You heard me."
The silence that follows is suffocating. Even your brother stops breathing.
The guy backs away. Mumbling something and disappearing down the hall.
Your brother exhales. "Okay... well. Damn."
You look at Kita. "Thank you."
"It was nothing," he says quietly, but there's heat in his gaze. "He shouldn't have spoken to you that way."
Your brother crosses his arms. "Don't think this means I like you."
Kita nods. "I never assumed you did."
"Good. Because we're still enemies."
"Only on the court," Kita replies.
Your brother pauses. "And off the court?"
Kita looks at you for one long, unguarded second. Soft. Warm. So obvious.
Your heart stumbles.
"Off the court," he says, "I'd like your sister to feel safe. And respected."
Your brother groans. "Oh my god-are you two-?"
You quickly choke, "No-! I mean- We're not- It's complicated!"
"Complicated," Kita repeats, the corner of his mouth lifting. "Not impossible."
Your brother throws his hands up. "You know what? Fine. Whatever. Just-if you're going to date her, keep it off the damn court."
Kita bows slightly. "Of course. I won't go easy just because I'm dating your sister."
Your cheeks burn. Kita meets your eyes again.
And in that quiet, calm voice that always makes your chest flutter, he murmurs:
"If anyone bothers you again... I'll deal with it."
