You didn't even realize you walked into a whole hangout until it was too late.
You had come over to return a hoodie Yamaguchi's sister lent you, planning to slip in, say hello, and leave. But the moment you stepped through the door, his sister shouted from the living room:
"OH PERFECT-she's here! We need another player!"
Before you could blink, she grabbed your wrist and dragged you into the circle of boys sitting on the carpet.
Yamaguchi was there too.
He looked up, eyes widening the second he saw you-like he wasn't expecting you tonight but was very, very happy you were.
"Hey," he said softly, giving you that shy smile you always secretly loved.
Your heart did a weird flutter. His sister nudged him. "Don't get all weird. She's just playing one round."
Yamaguchi turned even redder. "I-I wasn't being weird..."
But he was. Because you were his sister's best friend. And he had never been smooth around you.
You took a seat beside him, close enough that your knees brushed. He went stiff like it sent static all the way through him.
His sister spun the bottle.
It clicked. Wobbled. Slowed.
And stopped.
Pointing directly at you. And the opposite end?
Yamaguchi.
His sister let out the loudest gasp. "NO WAY. This is cursed."
He sputtered. "W-We don't have to if she doesn't-"
You cut him off with a playful smile. "It's fine. It's just a game."
He swallowed hard. "R-Right. A game."
The boys hooted like middle schoolers as his sister shoved you both toward the hallway closet.
The door shut behind you with a soft click.
It was dark. Quiet. Too quiet.
You could hear him breathing-fast, nervous, trying way too hard to control it.
He spoke first.
"I'm... sorry. My sister shouldn't have made you play. I know this is awkward. I know I'm awkward."
You took a slow step toward him. "Tadashi... we've known each other for years. You don't have to act like I'm going to bite."
"Not... not in a bad way," he said, voice cracking adorably. "You're just... you. And you're my sister's best friend. And I'm not supposed to think about you like I-"
He cut himself off with a tiny, panicked noise.
"Like you what?" you asked gently.
He shifted in the dark, toe of his shoe tapping lightly against yours. He was close. Close enough you could feel the warmth of him.
"I shouldn't say it," he whispered.
"Maybe I want you to."
Silence. Then his breath left him in one shaky exhale.
"I like you. I've always liked you. Since you used to come over after school and steal my snacks and call me 'Tadashi-baby' just to annoy me." His voice got softer. "But you're her best friend. And I didn't want to mess anything up. Or make you uncomfortable. Or-"
You touched his chest lightly, stopping the spiral.
"Tadashi," you whispered, "you could never make me uncomfortable."
He froze. Then, very softly:
"You... like me too?"
Instead of answering, you slid your hand up to his jaw, tilted his head toward you-
And kissed him.
He gasped into it, surprised, then melted-hands finding your waist, holding on like he'd dreamt about this for years. The kiss grew deeper, his breath shaky, fingers trembling as he pulled you just a little closer.
He kissed you like you were something fragile and precious. Like he couldn't believe this was happening.
When you finally parted, he kept his forehead against yours.
"I can't believe I just kissed my sister's best friend..." he whispered, dazed.
"Do you regret it?"
His answer was immediate. Almost desperate.
"No. Never."
Right then, the door swung open.
His sister stood there, eyes wide, then narrowing slowly.
"Oh my GOD," she said, pointing at you both. "If you two start dating, I'm calling dibs on all future wedding photos."
Yamaguchi made a strangled sound. You just laughed and laced your fingers with his.
