You didn't mean to cry.

Honestly, you didn't. You had been holding it together through the whole argument-tight throat, stinging eyes, that awful thump-thump-thump in your chest that always came before you fell apart. But when he sighed, dragged a hand through his hair, and muttered, "Can we do this later?" -your voice just cracked.

"Tetsu, I'm trying to talk to you."

He didn't even look back. Of course he didn't. Because she was standing behind him.

The girl from his chem lab. The one who always hovered too close, laughed too loudly at everything he said, and somehow managed to be around every time things between you and Kuroo got even a little bit tense.

She sniffled dramatically. "Kuroo... can we please talk? I-I really need you right now."

Kuroo turned toward her immediately-like instinct. Like muscle memory. Like she was the emergency and you were the inconvenience.

"Hey, hey, it's okay," he murmured, hand on her shoulder. "What happened?"

Your lip trembled. Hot tears slid down your cheeks as quietly as they could, but he didn't notice. He didn't even look back.

She leaned into him, clinging. And he let her.

You wrapped your arms around yourself, trying to hold in the hurt, the jealousy, the humiliation. Your breathing went sharp and uneven, panic pushing up your throat like you were drowning from the inside out.

"Kuroo," you whispered, "please don't walk away from me."

But he did. He followed her around the corner of the hallway, disappearing from sight-still murmuring reassurances, still holding her up, still ignoring the fact that you were cracking open behind him.

The moment he was gone, the silence hit hard. You covered your mouth and sobbed into your palm.

After a minute, you wiped your tears with the sleeve of your hoodie, grabbed your bag with shaking hands, and walked off campus. You didn't answer when he texted-because he didn't. He didn't call either.

He didn't even realize you'd left.

Later

It wasn't until almost two hours after that Kuroo checked his phone.

He expected a rant. He expected irritation. He expected something.

What he didn't expect was nothing.

No messages. No missed calls. No "we need to finish talking." No "you hurt me."

His stomach dropped.

He tried calling. Straight to voicemail. He tried texting.

Tetsu: hey where'd you go?
Tetsu: babe??
Tetsu: did u get home?
Tetsu: can u answer me please?

His chest tightened in a way that felt like panic.

He replayed the scene from earlier. Your face. Your eyes. The way your voice shook when you said his name.

And then- Then he realized exactly what he'd done.

He'd left you, the person he loved, crying and alone... to comfort someone else.

When you opened the door, your eyes were red. Kuroo's heart cracked in a way he couldn't hide.

"You didn't answer," he said softly. "I-I got scared."
