The church smelled of lilies and polished wood. Guests whispered softly behind you, their eyes flicking between you and the altar. The music swelled, a beautiful but suffocating soundtrack to a day you were supposed to be happiest.
Your heart wasn't in it. It hadn't been for months. You were in a perfect dress, hair done, makeup flawless, but inside you were hollow. Every smile you forced, every nod, felt like a lie.
Because there was only one person you truly wanted to see standing there with you-and he wasn't the man waiting at the altar.
The wedding had been planned since forever. The invitations were sent. His parents were thrilled. Yours... still upset, but they'd accepted it. Everyone had assumed it was a done deal. Everyone except you.
And then you saw him.
Yamamoto.
Your childhood best friend. The one who had left for another university, gone months at a time, whose laughter had been your constant growing up. He was there, standing quietly in the back, leaning against the wall, watching you with those familiar eyes. Calm. Warm. Waiting.
Your stomach twisted.
He hadn't said anything about coming. You hadn't dared to imagine he would. But there he was, and every beat of your heart screamed that this wasn't your life.
The music changed-the bridal march-but you couldn't move. Your hands shook around the bouquet. You looked at the man in the suit, at the crowd... and you realized: this wasn't right.
Your breaths came fast. Your heart thudded painfully. Then, with a courage you didn't know you had, you turned.
"I'm sorry," you whispered, voice trembling, but loud enough that a few heads turned. "I... I can't do this."
The groom's face went white. "What? What do you mean?"
"I can't marry you," you said, taking a step forward. "I don't love you. I... I'm not happy. And I've been trying to make this work, but I can't. I'm sorry."
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Your parents clutched each other. His mother's hand flew to her mouth. The minister's brow furrowed.
You turned and saw him standing there, Yamamoto's eyes were soft but intense, full of something you hadn't felt from anyone else: certainty. You ran out the church sitting on the steps, you didn't have to look back to see he had followed.
"I... I can't believe it," you said softly. "You came. Here."
"I had to," he said, tears threatening to spill. "I can't-."
He stepped closer, brushing a strand of hair from your face.
Every nerve in your body went taut. Every memory of childhood adventures, late-night talks, and secret dreams with him came flooding back. The way he always knew you better than anyone else. The way he always made you laugh even when you wanted to cry.
"I... I love you," you whispered.
His smile was soft, but his eyes shone with relief and something fierce. "I've been waiting years to hear that."
The crowd was silent. Shocked. Some whispered. Some gasped. But you didn't care.
He took your hand, intertwining your fingers, and pressed a gentle kiss to the back of your hand. "We'll figure the rest out," he said. "Right now... I just want you. Here. With me."
And in that moment, you realized you were finally where you belonged. Not a flawless wedding with a man you didn't love... but with the boy who had been your heart all along.
